Have a pre-model 32 or 33. 4" barrel, 38 S&W. Serial is 17,6XX. I know this one was made between 1917 and 1940. Strongly suspect Late teens or very early 20's. Someone have a list, by year, that I may get an idea of year of manufacture?

I'm out of town and don't have any of my books at my disposal, but I can tell you for sure that the J frame didn't debut until the 1950's. I frames were produced until then.

Also, if yours has the extended roung-to-square grips with a step on the backstrap, then would be called a .38 Regulation Police.
If no one gives you more info by the time I get home, I'll try to give you more specifics.
