Hey there fellas I am a new member but I have been around the block a few hundred times with guns and I love my S&W wheel guns like no other. I got this old Heavy Duty in a pawn shop about 2 years ago for $200 otd after tax. The cool part about it is my dad was with me when I got it and I was gonna put her on layaway and he gave me the money to bring it home!! The funny thing is the guys at the shop didn't even know what it was lol. I have wanted one of these cool N frames to play around with for a long time too. This one had a set of Hogue goodyears on it when I bought it. I have been looking for a set of factory grips that is period correct forever but no luck around here. The gun was made in 1949 the serial # is S 740xx it must have been one of the last ones to have the awesome long action. I am so happy it does too I love the long action much more than the short call me crazy but 5 hats how I like it. Here is a couple of pictures of it and let me know what you think about these guys around here. Btw I feed it a steady diet of 12 grains 2400 and 158 grain hard cast match slugs and it's a laser if I ever shot one!! This is by far one of the most accurate handguns I have 3 very shot and I have shot enough ammo out of em to float a fleet of battleships around in brass lol.

Welcome to the Forum.
That's a heckova good way to start.
That serial number should have an S in front of it. It is one of the last of the Transitional models.
You got a GREAT deal on that one! It's worth about 5 times that in today's market. I paid $250 for my 5" Heavy Duty about 15 years ago. It's from about 1952. It is my favorite N-Frame. I carry it in a LOBO IWB holster sometimes. Even used it to re qualify for my carry permit. The range officer had never seen one.:D

1Aspenhill, a member on here is the go-to-guy for Heavy Duties. He has a website. I think it is .38/44 Heavy Duty.com. Check it out.

Welcome to the Forum!
That's a nice 4" Transitional HD you have and a great gun to make a first post about.

Try placing an add in the "wanted to buy" section in the classifieds here, or contacting member "1Aspenhill" to see if he has an extra set of period correct grips for it.

Here's a picture of mine, serial #S73486 (shipped in December 1949) with the original grips so you can see what you are looking for.

You aren't kidding anyone Bill, you'd buy a ton of them at any price ;)

Great looking HD, they are an oddly pleasing gun to own and shoot. I have never been able to adequately explain just why the sum of an HD is more then the whole. I can list all the reasons I love them, but in the end the math doesn't add up and they are just way better then they should be on paper.

Nice gun (I'm a little jealous and not just because of the price - smile) and good opening post. Welcome! Hope to see/hear more from you in the future.

That is one awesome revolver! Don't it feel good to get it at that price too! It looks in great shape to boot. Once you get those period correct grips that thing will look really sharp. I was lucky enough to find one just like it last year. Mine was in a pawn shop originally and I had to pay a bit more ($400) and I thought mine was a steal.
But yours tops that. Glad you found this forum and hope you will feel welcome.

I would have happily paid 400 myself buddy!!! I have wanted a heavy duty since I was a kid reading Elmer Keith articles on what he did with them!! It was a true grail of mine and I just got so lucky knowing what it was and being at the right place at the right time. It has since become my favorite handgun to shoot I have ever owned. With 12.5 grains of 2400 that bad boy will thump with the best of them and I will swear on my name it shoots better than my pre 27 5" !! In my experience it likes the heavier loads better than light ones. It tends to group slightly better some may think I am blowing smoke here but I can clover leaf them at 30 yards all day long with this HD. I will keep my eyes open for a set of factory grips like I have been for a long time but until I do the Miculek grips are perfect for me. The HD just fits my hand like it was made for me. I am just a N frame fanatic though!!

Here is a couple of pictures of it and let me know what you think about these guys around here.

What do I think? I think I'll give you $300 for it is what I think! Nice one. I enjoy the post war transitional guns. Everyone obsesses over the K22 post war transitionals, but any post war transitional gun is a nice find and you got a bargain for sure. You will need some luck finding a pair of grips, as mine did not have originals either. JSYK, you need the post war "sharp shoulder" variety that are a tiny bit longer since the post war trans frames were a tiny bit longer than the model of 1950 short action frames.

Here is my post war HD trans with later grips. Its S67560 which shipped in 1946.

Thanks for the heads up on the grips Jim!! I knew the grip frame on the pre war guns were about a 1/16th of an inch longer. But I didn't know the transition models used the pre war frame. I sure do love the long actions though!! You guys posting all those pictures sure does make me happy knowing there are others out there that love these unknown magnums as much as I do!!
