at the doctor's office this morning.

I was waiting in the lobby to have the morphine in my pump turned up by .2mg/day and was talking to a gentleman older than I was. (so was his wife)

We were talking about how hot it was and how hot it had been and how hot is was going to be....(it's hot here in the SE right now). That's when I learned that is was NASA's fault it was/is/gonna be so "dadgummed" hot. "They been knocking holes in the trionusfear with all them missles. If God wanted people on the moon he would have made a ladder up to it and/or given them wings.

Then he got to talking about taxes. Said he was retierd Army and retired Postal. The old man got up and showed me his check book where he had penned in depostis for what looked about right for retirement checks. Then I learned another interesting fact. He said that if you had two government retirement checks (fed/fed, fed/state/, fed/county) that when you started to draw your social security that they (the social security people) would take back 2/3 of it in taxes.

When I got home it did some "looking into" what I had learned. Not the stuff about the ladders and wings (I already knew that), but the taxes. I could only find where that if you filed a joint return and your adjusted income was over $44K that you might have to pay taxes on up 85% of your SS check.

I googled and snopes'd that stuff about NASA, but gor zero results. Anyone have anything to add to his words of wisdom?

I KNEW THAT STUFF WASN'T JUST MADE UP BY THE PENTACOSTs. (Just kidding) But I will be keeping my eyes open for some Crown Vic Interceptors cruising around the neighborhood for a few days.

My brother worked for NASA in the 80s. He said one shuttle launch did more damage to the ozone and the atmosphere than all the other emissions from the USA for a full year.

Funny how NASA only makes public data and information that forwards certain political agendas.

Sounds like the old coot you ran into knew the straight skinny, but wasn't real articulate on relaying it to you.

He's kind of right on this, I was caught in this when I filed for SS, it's call the Windfall Elimination Provision. See here...

I am going to be so screwed when I start getting Social Security, I will already be doing 2 fed retirements.

Oh wait, it really doesn't matter, we are all going to be screwed.... ;)

kinda, but knida not when he was taling about himself (or me) cause he had way more than 30 years of sustainable income. Closer to 40 in his case and over 37 in mine. So the decuctiion/reduction would be zero.

I know this is kind of hijacking, but its serious stuff and all interrelated. If there's one thing the government does poorly (and they're bad or really bad at most things), its informing people about SS and how the convoluted tax laws interact. No one can figure out where they stand, nor can they make intelligent decisions without the facts.

My boss tells me any problem can be solved by using common sense. The problem is he/we don't have any of that, and I've never seen it for sale. Worse, to apply common sense you need a good grasp of the facts and need to understand how they apply to the situation at hand. SS and retirement payments (along with savings vehicles and IRAs/401k) all can and should influence your money management.

Someone smart should write a book. But if the jerks in government found out they'd written one, they'd change the laws.

I had planned on retiring on Federal retirement, Social Security, and County retirement.

My new retirement plan: Work until they carry me out feet first.

Retirement

I worked with an old man who was approaching retirement age. I knew him well enough to ask if he would be retiring (his wife had passed away a few years earlier).
His answer was that he would not retire but would leave feet first.

The gentleman's health had been declining.

I took my usual June vacation and met Harold in the hall way. Honestly he had a glow about him and he looked better than I had seen him in years.

I went out on a business lunch and ate too much as usual. Upon returning I was trying to fight off sleep. Then I heard the sound of a siren and the ambulance turned into our plant.
They carted him off feet first. He died while sitting at his desk. I was happy for him because death came quickly and his feet first wish came true.
