With the modest exception of true working livestock guardian dogs that will live with the flock, dogs belong with their people. They are pack animals, and their people are their pack. My dogs have only been outside as needed, and are otherwise in with us. They will perform much better as security when inside, too.

Mckenny99, how is it that u live in the country but there’s a neighbors dog 50’ from your window??????? Sounds kinds urban

This is the most rural-cop post I’ve ever read, because it is 100% true and not known by most people.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve pulled up at a house and been met by a wild-eyed guy saying DON’T YOU SHOOT MY DOG!

I could shoot their wife, and get a shrug. But DON’T YOU SHOOT MY DOG.

Dogs are a given on the rez. If I shot every dog that tried to bite me, I’d have done nothing but shoot dogs and then write reports about shooting dogs.

I learned the ones to watch were the sneaky buggers that wouldn’t make eye contact and would try to get behind me.

Best response? ASP baton. They had all been smacked by a tribal cop with an ASP baton and knew the sound. If not, a whack on the snout would do.

There were 4 lots that were all part of an old farm that was broken up into 6 acre lots and due to the lay of the property resulted in deep narrow lots. My lot/house was the last lot sold and the house was built behind the neighbors house (500 ft from the road) but unfortunately right next to their barn. (We didn't build the house. We bought the house about 2 years after is was completed. The people who chose the layout were not the brightest bulbs in the box.)
