These are some pals of mine. They are by far my favorite out of dozens of S&W autos. The little one has been with me through some rough stuff, and the 39-2 is like shaking hands with a dear old friend.
Both of them went to the range with me today, and both are still cutting one hole in the paper at 15 yards.

Nice! I too have a 3913 that has been with me for a while. I've got newer, more "high tech" 9mm autos, but I believe it is still the favorite of those that are "carry-able". It is accurate enough with Federal Hydra-shoks that it could be considered a mini target pistol. :)

I have a 4516, 4566, 4563TSW, and 4506. Of the 45 series pistols, the 4566 is my favorite, but i do carry the 4516 frame with 4566 slide sometimes. I really like that combo. Just like my 6906 frame with 5906 slide and CZ 75 compact frame with full size slide. Something about the compact grip and long sight radius feels great to me. But of all the pistols in my lineup (from 7 makers and 5 generations), the 3913s get carried the most and the 39-2s get shot the most. One of my 39-2s has 25,000 recorded rounds through it.

In the 70 and 80s use to ask my Dad why he never got any new guns..... his basic 4 dated from 1938/39, 46,50something and a early 60s Smith 41. As a Captain he was still carrying the same guns he had when he was a Rookie Patrolman or a Sargent...............................

Today I have more guns than he ever did; or, I really need...... but 95% of the time you'll generally find me with a early 90s 3913/NL or 6906........ a Beretta 92 Compact from 1989 or an Type M from 93 or a 3" Smith 66 from about 1987/88. Single stack/High Cap. and a revolver.

Now I guess I understand!!!!

LOL............... love the feel and proportions of my PC SD-9 with it's stainless 6906 frame and 4 1/4inch barrel ...................... and my FrankinSmith 6906 with a 915 barrel/slide...........

My favorite.45 to shoot is a Smith 4566.....thou I have to admit to "carrying" a Sig 220 or 245 when I feel the need for .45.......it's a weight thing!!!!.

Yup. I parted with every plastic pistol and every post-lock revolver in my collection, and have ZERO regrets. I never shot them, never carried them, and never really even looked at then anymore. I used the funds to buy some more 3rd gen S&Ws, revolvers, and Berettas. I do have a few new-ish Ruger 22/45 pistols, but everything else is from before my Navy career started 20 years ago.
 
I had a Berretta FS92 a few years ago now. Sorry I ever sold it. It was the nicest firing 9mm I have ever fired. The trigger was phenominal on it. Around a 3oz pull on it.
 
I have a factory 2-tone beretta 92 that i bought new in 1999. I recently modified it to "g" mode (decock only) and it has become a wonderful shooter and even gets holster time. I lost 25 pounds not long ago so it is not as easy to conceal bigger handguns, but i still prefer to have a full-sized pistol with me given the choice.

Are the safety levers modified on both of your pistols?

One used to be able to buy the single-side-only lever assembly from Midway for $35. I bought several, but ran out of them before I ran out of pistols to install them in.
The 39-2 has a US Navy CPO Anchor engraved on the safety, and I typically remove the starboard-side safety on my carry pistols (the exception is the Beretta 92 "G" conversion, which relies on the right side lever to spring back into "fire" mode).
I have two pistols with the CPO anchor engraved on the safety. The one above, and this 6906 (sorry I don't have a pic of the other side):

Thanks for the information. I am looking around for a couple of 2nd Generation models, namely the 645 and 439, or possibly a 39-2 and I do not care for the retaining screw on the 2nd Generation ambi-safety. This may be an answer for me.

The model 3913 LS and the 908 often same with single-side safety. I robbed one from a 908, swapped the ambi into it, and the guy I sold the 908 to preferred the ambi, so we were both happy.
I have had a 39 or 39-2 for so long I found the addition of the right side lever to be a mild annoyance. I never carry with the safety "on" but use it as a decocker, and when racking the slide on reload, I found that my non-firing thumb might push the lever down giving me a dead trigger and a split second's problem to solve.
There was a run of 4566 pistols with docoker-only setups, and I don't know why I don't have one. It's the most popular mod of the Beretta 92 series for good reason.

It has been out of stock at Beretta USA since about 45 minutes after they introduced it. They are out there, but it takes a bit of shopping to find them in stock. I paid $65 shipped for mine, and it's a wonderful piece of machinery.
