I love bolt action shotguns !

I have an old Stevens 20ga model 58 that I got when my beloved model 24 410/22 over & under got stolen from our house. I'd rather have the old model 24, but the 58 makes a pretty good slug gun.

Marlin Goose Gun

Once upon a time a few decades ago there was a minor market on the Texas Gulf Coast for the 10 ga. Marlin Goose Gun for those inclined to launch mass quantities at geese. Quite a beast.

They were a cheap way to produce a repeating shotgun back in the day. My brother had a J. C. Higgins bolt action 16 gauge he hunted with for many years. He wasn't really a gun guy at the time (he is more of one now), and that Higgins 16 worked fine for his needs.

I got a 20 ga JC Higgins bolt action with a poly choke for Christmas when I was about 14 yrs old. It was ugly, clumsy, heavy and was the only gun I've ever owned that I can say I just hated. I traded that thing off as soon as I was legally old enough to.

Haha, I like ‘em too!

I have a Mossberg 695 around here somewhere. One day I’ll hunt down an extended mag for it and turn it into the long-gone and little-missed Police version.

(Not my pic)

Several years ago I was given a catalog from Tula Arsenal, in Russia. One of their guns was a "camping shotgun".

Bolt action 20 gauge, folding stock, 12" barrel, detachable box magazine, came with two mags.

Folded it was about 20" long. Would fit inside a normal backpack.

NFA (SBS), so it wasn't importable, but is that cool, or what?

There were a lot of bolt shotguns around when I was a kid in the '60s. Most of the ones I saw were store brand, JC Higgins or Revelation or some such. I never had one but my buddy did and that gun kicked like a government mule. It beat that kid black and blue. Made me happy that I had an H&R single shot.

I have one.
It is a "cut down one that meets the minimum legal size.
It's for sale. I'll take it to the Tyler Gun Show tomorrow.
100 dollars buys it.

I have a Mossberg 185K-A 20 ga. with a poly choke and a bolt action. It's still in good shape after almost 70 years. It was made in the early 50's. Actually I guess I gave that one to my daughter come to think of it. It's something of a family heirloom. My uncle offered to give it to my brother when he was about 10 years old. Dad jumped in said he couldn't give him a shotgun like that at his age. My brother asked what if he could buy it with his own money. Dad said if you have your own money no man can tell you what to do with it. My brother got $5 for his birthday about a week earlier. He said, "I got $5," and my uncle said "Sold," before day could get a word in. Always true to his word, dad let my brother keep the shotgun although he wasn't allowed to have any shells for it for a good while. It was funny really because my brother already had a .410 that dad had given him. I guess he figured a 20 ga. was a lot more dangerous. He was closely watched when he shot either of course.

My brother moved out eventually and left the Mossberg behind. I was in college and dad knew I didn't have a HD gun so he gave me that one. So it's been around my family pretty good. My daughter knows to keep that one. It's not worth much to anyone but us.

Even when I was a kid I preferred a good single over bolt actions.
I think they are bulky and clumsy and ugly. The only thing they
had going for them is cut down with rifle sights they made very
good slug guns. I don't pay much attention to them but I believe
that a good older blue steel & walnut stocked single barrel with
sell for more than average bolt action. 410s are not included,
anything 410 brings premium money compared to the larger
Guages.

My Granddad had an old Stevens bolt action .410 that he used for pheasants. Used Winchester XX loads with #5 shot. We called him "the pencil shooter." I still have a couple boxes of it. He shot one gun until it wore out, threw it out and bought another one just like the first. My son has it, and it's about worn out too. Granddad killed thousands (no exaggeration) of pheasants with those two guns. He had other shotguns - Browning A5, Winchester 12, etc., and I asked him why he didn't use them. He just said he didn't like "to tear 'em all up" with those big guns. He was a pretty good rifle shooter and the worst handgun shooter I ever saw, but the man was a positive genius with a shotgun. I think he was probably the best field shooter I ever saw.

A LGS near me has over 100 in 12 ga. with no bolts!

This is probably due to a recall. I don't remember the make or model but I bought several of them real cheap back in the 80's when I found out about the recall. I believe I got $125 for the first bolt then $100 each for the next pair. And I think $75 each for the last pair. The price went down over time. No idea if it is still a valid recall item or not. You simply called them with a serial number, they sent a little box for the bolt. You sent the bolt in and a nice check showed up in the mail. I one upped you LGS though. I took what I had left from them to one of the gun grabbers buy backs and traded each one for a $75 gift certificate and left with a big smile. Sure gave me a warm & fuzzy feeling knowing those dangerous stocks and barrels would never be used again.

They were the J C Higgins brand because it was claimed that the bolt would strike you in the face. I never found out if the bolt problem was during firing the gun or opening the bolt. The bolt retaining screw was not much to speak of and probably could have been the problem.

My first shotgun, J C Higgins 12 ga bolt action, was given to me in a box with a broken stock and it was a rusted mess. I cleaned it up and fixed the stock which split again because it was made prior to the installation of a cross bolt. I killed a lot of rabbits with that gun.

I have a Stevens 410, it was given to me back in 1964 from a neighbor, I never shot it, someday I will take it out and see if it shoots.
