...because I see these new movie previews and TV shows and I have no idea who any of these actors and actresses are. Sure I know a few, but I grew up with Harrison Ford, Clint Eastwood, John Wayne in reruns since he died when I was three. But most of the actors I know are either over 40 or are collecting social security. Not to mention the fact that all of the music I listened to in high school is now considered classic rock. All of the toys I played with are now considered antiques, and the video games they have now give me a headache if I even look at them for too long. My cellphone is even out of date. It doesn't take pictures, (that's what my camera does) but it does make phonecalls!

I know exactly what your talking about guys.
But I wouldn't want to start over, it's been a long journey.
If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.

As long as I am able to complain, I figure I am doing pretty good. Saw daylight again this morning!

hehe this reminds me of this email I got last week!! It was titled "Older then Dirt" plus... it had a quiz!! hehe Talking about some of the things you "remembered" from when you grew up...

Blackjack Gum
Skate Key
PF Flyers(did I get that one right?)
diners with juke boxes on the table
Studebaker
candy cigarettes

man there was a whole list of stuff....
I only remembered 5 things... the rest I'd been told about... so I'm still young! lol

I used to take pretty good care of myself ... but then I saw life passing me by so I took a proper nose dive to remedy that condition and ultimately left my well-being in the loving hands of my wife

My sentiments exactly except that I must be about 16 years older than you are.

Also, I once could tell you make, model, trim options, engine options and so forth, on ever car on the road. Now all the cars are shaped like Easter eggs and everyone actually drives some sort of hybrid, SUV, cross-over, cross-dress, cross-purpose aberration of a vehicle.

I actually miss the '69 Chrysler that we kept for so many years with it's curb weight of 5200 lbs., big-block 375 HP 440 V8, super stretch leg and hip room, and with a trunk that was large enough to park an extended mini-van inside. It may have only gotten 8-10 miles-per-gallon but one could effortlessly float down the long Texas interstate highways at 90 miles per hour in delightful comfort with the cold A/C blowing in his face and the factory 8-track playing favorite tunes.

I still have the 8-track tapes.

Back then respectable firearms were made of steel and walnut and plastic and DAO triggers had not fouled the shooting world with their pernicious presence.

"...I have no idea..."

What is more, I don't care.

Sprint ads make fun of other cell phone companies for selling plans "that only make phone calls."
Yes I was 14 when we were able to get a phone and it was a 10 party line. I am glad to have a cell phone that only makes phone calls. No camera, no internet, no blackberry on mine.

The question you have to ask yourself is: are we all better off with all this "stuff"? Remember when you got your news from an AM radio, the TV had 2 channels (if you had a TV), a big MAC was 25 cents and a coke was 5 cents. My black 49 Ford Custom had curb feelers, fender skirts, and cool hubs. Life was GOOD!!!!

Actually we have a phone booth here in town. No phone in it though, it just sits empty on the street. If I can I think I'll get a picture so I can show one to my son when he gets older.

Record players that had three speeds 33,45 & 78?
78 rpm records that were only cut on one side? (These were before my time, but I had a few.)
Margarine that had a little "color pack" that had to be worked into it to make it yellow?
Telephone exchanges that had actual names instead of numbers? (Ours was Mohawk 4320 and it was a 4 party-line)
A little prism on your car that let you see the overhead traffic light when your windshield had an external visor?
Curb feelers?
Fake whitewalls? Half moons? Full Moons? Fuzzy Dice?
Butch wax? Blue Suede Shoes? (I actually had a pair.)
Nixie tubes? Sky Watchers?

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be..........

hahahaha we were on about a 10 party line when i lived in the BIGGGGGG city of Oak Grove Ar pop 235

In another few years I will suck at Trivial Pursuit because I do not watch or listen to "popular" stuff.

Speaking of old phone numbers, your childhood phone number makes a great computer password. You won't forget it. It's probably from another city or state. And how many of your current contacts know your phone number from when you were 10 years old. My daughter put me onto this idea.

I remember the license number of my father's car from 1939. That would make a great password or PIN too. However 1131W3, my old phone #wouldn't be a good password.

You know you're getting old when you have explain bits in movies or TV.
I had to explain to a young cousin that when the movie "2001" was made in the 1960s Pan Am was a major airline and Howard Johnson's a major hotel/restaurant chain, that they were not things made up for the movie.
On the other hand, adults did that for me when I was a kid.

David,
I'm 61 yoa and I don't know who they are anymore,
but more importantly, I don't care who they are.
Gettin' old has some advantages.

Rule 303

No I don't think we are better off. I think there is something to be said for the 50's era and I say routinely that I was born in the wrong time period.

I work with computers every day but there are days I'd just like to retreat to the simpler times that we just don't have...

Speaking of phone booths, I remember the ones in the big department stores downtown. They were made of wood, had a light and a fan that came on when you closed the door. Heck there was even a little seat so you could sit down when making your call. Said department stores had elevators with uniformed lady operators who wore stockings with seams down the back. They announced the floors and what merchandise was available at each stop.

I know the feeling, I turned 49 last month. I notice I have less patience with my co-workers. Don't know many of the new actors so I watch a lot of older movies like 'Ride the high Country'. Read more, hate the rap music my kid listens to.

Went to the movies for my birthday and saw Edge of Darkness with Mel Gibson. Went to find a new copy of the Green Berets with John Wayne and couldn't find one. I am off today and have to go to the Dells this week for a meeting am taking the wife and kids so they can have fun in the water parks.

Most of the people at the meeting will be women my age or younger, the men will be younger so my conversations will be work related.

Maybe I am not just getting old but grumpy too.

Growing old is better than the alternative. I think most of the actors and actresses I liked growing up are all gone to their rewards now. As are the television shows. I miss the old days. We may not have had as many conveniences and luxuries back then, but life seemed a lot slower and more enjoyable. It's sad that those times are long gone.

I too turned 49 last month. While I still feel and think like a youngster. Time is catching up with me. The follies of youth are now taking there toll on my body.

I embrace tech. I have my water cooled overclocked desktop computers, The laptop, a netbook and my I-Phone. Had a Home Theater setup before most knew what it was. Now in bad need of a major upgrade. A proud owner of a 09 Civic Hybrid. (Not a Greene) But the 60 plus mpg I can get out of it is very nice. But it's all coming to a point that I can't keep up with it.

I had a 1969 Chrysler Newport when I was a younger man. And it would eat up interstate miles something great! Had 60k miles on it when I purchased it from a little old lady for $600. Had 320k miles on it when i sold it for $600. <<<< Best car I ever owned.

I remember the last of the party lines in Ar./Ok. Soft drinks that came in a bottle. Beer cans that had to be opened with a can opener. Old school canned motor oil. 25 cent a gallon gasoline and gas wars. A time when A/C in your home or car was a luxury. Black & White TV. Fax machine that were big drum type machines that took a PHD to operate.

And none of it means a thing. A life time warranty on a product means what to me? My father is pushing 73 and having heart issues. I doubt he makes 75. I'm 23 years behind him.

I use to wonder why old men got grumpy sometimes.

Now I know. ;)

Try working the crossword puzzle in the back of TV Guide. I never even heard of most of the shows, let alone the actors or their characters.

I will be 69 next month. I dont know why, but all the sudden I am makeing a lot of new friends!

They print celebrity birthdays in our local newspaper every day and I recognize some of them who are over 40. The ones younger than that it's rare if I've ever even heard of them. Truly I'm not really interested in new movies or TV shows. (Except 24, I'm addicted to that). I like everything old. Cars, houses, movies, music, of course guns, and women. ( The missus has 4 1/2 years on me). I somehow feel in good company on this forum. We are NOT old, we're seasoned.

Found this in my E-mail today.

Subject: $5.37

How close to home is this one? sad but,, true?

$5.37
That's what the kid behind the counter at Taco Bell said to me. I dug into my pocket and pulled out some lint and two dimes and something that used to be a Jolly Rancher.

Having already handed the kid a five-spot, I started to head back out to the truck to grab some change when the kid with the Emo hairdo said the harshest thing anyone has ever said to me.

He said, "It's OK Sir. I'll just give you the senior citizen discount."

I turned to see who he was talking to and then heard the sound of change hitting the counter in front of me.

"Only $4..68" he said cheerfully. I stood there stupefied.

I am 62, not even 65 yet?"
A mere child!
Senior citizen?

I took my burrito and walked outside & into the truck wondering what was wrong with Emo.

Was he blind?
As I sat in the truck, my blood began to boil.
Old?
Me?

I'll show him, I thought.
I opened the door and headed back inside.
I strode to the counter, and there he was waiting with a smile.

Before I could say a word, he held up something and jingled it in front of me, like I could be that easily distracted!

What am I now? A toddler?

"Dude! Can't get too far without your car keys, eh?"

I stared with utter disdain at the keys.
I began to rationalize in my mind.
"Leaving keys behind hardly makes a man elderly! It could happen to anyone!"

I turned and headed back to the truck.
I slipped the key into the ignition, but it wouldn't turn.

What now?
I checked my keys and tried another.
Still nothing.

That's when I noticed the purple beads hanging from my rearview mirror..
I had no purple beads hanging from my rearview mirror.

Then, a few other objects came into focus.
The car seat in the back seat.
Happy Meal toys spread all over the floorboard.

A partially eaten doughnut on the dashboard.
Faster than you can say ginkgo biloba, I flew out of the alien vehicle.

Moments later I was speeding out of the parking lot, relieved to finally be leaving this nightmarish stop in my life.
That is when I felt it, deep in the bowels of my stomach: hunger!
My stomach growled and churned, and I reached to grab my burrito, only it was nowhere to be found.

I swung the truck around, gathered my courage, and strode back into the restaurant one final time.

There Emo stood, draped in youth and black nail polish.
All I could think was, "What is the world coming to?"

All I could say was, "Did I leave my food and drink in here?"

At this point I was ready to ask a Boy Scout to help me back to my vehicle, and then go straight home and apply for Social Security benefits.

Emo had no clue. I walked back out to the truck, and suddenly a young lad came up and tugged on my jeans to get my attention. He was holding up a drink and a bag.

His mother explained, "I think you left this in my truck by mistake."
I took the food and drink from the little boy and sheepishly apologized.

She offered these kind words:
"It's OK.. My grandfather does stuff like this all the time.

All of this is to explain how I got a ticket doing 85 in a 40.

Yes, I was racing some punk kid in a Toyota Prius.
And no, I told the officer, I'm not too old to be driving this fast..

As I walked in the front door, my wife met me halfway down the hall.
I handed her a bag of cold food and a $300 speeding ticket.

I promptly sat in my rocking chair and covered up my legs with a blanky.
The good news was I had successfully found my way home.

Just in case you weren't feeling too old today.
The people who are starting college this fall were born in 1991.
They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up.
Their lifetime has always included AIDS.
The CD was introduced two years before they were born.
They have always had an answering machine.
They have always had cable.
Jay Leno has always been on the Tonight Show. (until recently)
Popcorn has always been micro waved.
They never took a swim and thought about Jaws.
They don't know who Mork was or where he was from.
They never heard: 'Where's the Beef?', 'I'd walk a mile for a Camel ', or 'de plane Boss, de plane'.
McDonald's never came in Styrofoam containers.
They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter.
They never saw a $2.00 bill

Pass this on to the other old fogies on your list.
Notice the larger type? That's for those of us who have trouble reading.

P.S. Save the earth. It's the only planet with chocolate.

Hi, me again. Just wanted to tell feralmerril not to feel bad about the senior citizen discount. Two years ago I got my first one and have been getting them regularly ever since. The fiscal conservative in my gladly accepts. I'll be 45 next month.
