This involves a Remington Model 66 rifle with the black plastic stock.

The rifle was pawned, and it was listed without a serial number.

I have had other Model 66's and I know they had serial numbers, so I go to the pawn shop and visually inspect the rifle.

No serial number - and the finish does not indicate that it has been altered at all. Not been refinished and is appropriately worn.

I know the time frame for manufacture starts in 1959, prior to the GCA of 1968.

I have looked at a number of model 66's on Gun Broker and found several without serial numbers.

So my extended S&W family, is there any way confirming the fact serial numbers were not placed on early models of the Model 66 and how to determine if the one I have located can be confirmed as one that does not have a serial number?

Thank to all in advance.

Was actually in process of calling them max. There is a barrel code on the left hand side of the barrel and Remington can tell you when it was made.

The one in question was manufactured in September of 1964.

there are codes on the barrel, both side that give date of manufacture, I don't know the dates myself but have a couple friends that do. there probably wouldnt be a serial # on the early guns.

Dan

looks like you already figured that out while i was typing

I have a Savage model 24D (22/410) that dosnt have a serial number, but I think Remington always used them. I have a 1874 Remington Rollingblock in 44-90 Sharps with a serial number and a Remington Model 25 (25-20 pump).

I never heard of Remingtons without serial numbers.

You have now. The posters above are absolutely correct, The "Nylon" series of rifles were not serial numbered until required by GCA '68, the "Gun-Control Act of 1968" if you aren't familiar with the acronym, which was a "knee-jerk" reaction to the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963.

Before 1968 there were many guns which were not serial numbered, mostly .22 Caliber and shotguns unless of relatively high quality. (High enough they probably carried a warranty).
