I bought one of these from Harbor Freight
5-In-1 Stud Finder/Voltage Tester
Using it takes a little patience. You have to start with a location where you know there is a stud and adjust it to where it just barely will detect the stud and light up. Once you get it adjusted you have to move it over the surface of the wall pretty slowly, but if you do all that it works pretty well.

If you find a stud, another one will be along in 16”.
