Thanks for everyones helpful ideas...it took about four hours but its done....

I have never taken one down this far as I keep all mine clean..this one was a mess...I found some sponge matterial that had a white nylon brillo on the other side (its used for cleaning tile after you apply grout to whipe it down) seemed to work very well, removed virtually all the scratch marks and didnt polish the finish. I kept moving in the same direction as the lines in the factory finish to eliminate swirls. You tell me..what do you think?

Question for the DX owners, the action on this gun is very, very smoooooth. I have several other 629 classics, 29 hunters etc and this is sooo smoooth double action. Did smith do anything to these (dx's) differently to make the action that good?

I take it by the pics you got the side plate back on.
That looks good. I've read those are excellent shooters. Give us a range report after you try her out.

There's nothing like a clean revolver like that. You did a great job.

you did a nice job, I don't know about any special action work but they are definitely tack drivers

I realized why this gun seemed to have a smoother trigger pull, the main spring screw was not turned in as far as my other 629's....

Have you shot the gun yet? With that screw backed out that far there is the possibility you won't get primer ignition every time. It makes for a real light trigger pull, but it could present problems. Back when I shot bowling pins, I used a 29 in double action with 44 spcl's and backed off the screw to get the lightest trigger, then tightened it down until I got positive ignition 100% of the time. Some primers are harder than others so you must make sure it's 100% with any ammo you might use. .02

Looks OK I guess. Could be better. I'll send you several of my revolvers that you can practice on until you get it right. I would like to help you with your training. :D

PM, very funny...got a laugh out of me and its only 5:30 in the morning. As for ignition..we will find out today, I loaded up some 240swc last evening...

The front of your cylinder is more rounded off than the one on my 629. Is that something that model comes with or did you have that done?

That revolver is entirely too clean. You must shoot it at once before it realizes it is naked and suffers embarrassment and ridicule from properly used revolvers everywhere.

Bigshot500,

She looks great! You can head out and foul her up with lead knowing you can always make her look new again.

The DXs did not recieve special action work. They were only tested for accuracy. Some one may have stoned the parts or it may have gotten smoother from use or it may just have come off the assembly line smoother than average.

The beveled front corner was standard on 1990s 629 Classics and Mountain Guns. It is sometimes called a black powder bevel. It's still standard on Mountain Guns and maybe Classics as well.
