I recently acquired several well used, entry level AR's including a S&W M&P Sport lower with a PSA upper in 7.62x39mm, and many parts. I have had an original Sport upper since April. Apparently, like Brer Rabbit, it spent most of it's life in the briar patch, as it was covered in scratches. The front sight was gone, it appeared to have been gnawed off. I had to use a file and Dremel tool to reshape and smooth both areas. I used tooth picks and a Birchwood Casey shiny black pen to touch up those areas and scratches. Cosmetically it turned out fairly well. I put it on the Sport lower, and swapped the stock furniture out for a set of Magpul MOE in ODG. I mounted a Monstrum red dot on it.
With cheap ammo and the sun cooperating to not obliterate the dot, the Sport would hold a 4"-6" group off a rest. Good ammo with the Monstrum unit produced 3"-4" groups. Good ammo, a polished trigger and spring kit, and a Bushnell 1x-4x AR scope produced 2" groups. Those 5R barrels do shoot. I believe I have enough parts to make another lower for the 7.62x39 and get it up and running.
