I seriously can't take anymore of the 3rd gen prices

The more I look on gunbroker and and in local shops and see the prices of these firearms approaching "new" costs the more I want to freak out and yell at the people Pricing these things. Let me ask this, do you see the price of a 15 year old Camaro even in the same ballpark as a new one? No, you don't. Jeesh. Is just like to find a really clean 5906 with its original stuff for around 400 bucks. What am I on mars and asking for a mcdonalds around every boulder?

Actually someone I know sold a Pace style camaro, white with orange stripes, orange interior and convertible. I believe it was a 1968 model but can't remember if that's with or without the wing vents. It brought $28,000 years ago, possibly 10 years ago. He said it would have brought more had the engine been original.

The seller sets a price on something and the market decides whether that price will be held and for how long. it's called capitalism. :D

Note - I just reread your post and saw you specified 15 years old. I don't know that a Camaro at that age would bring as much as a new one.

Reviving an old thread here.

Given the panics of the last year, any updates on values?

Well I've come to figure out its all in where you shop. I've found two LGS within an hour from my home that are very reasonable. I think every store is stockpiled with guns now so prices have gone back to normal if not better. I just put a gorgeous 639 on layaway. Paid $360 and was happy

That's a great deal. Most of the even pristine or NIB 3 gens I see are under $600. Most are under $500. I've bought 2 LNIB for under $400.

To me, even at $600 a NIB or LNIB 3rd gen is a bargain.

For me, I would go up to $600 for a LNIB 9Mm or 40. .45 and 10MM would go as high as $750. But they gotta be LNIB. Deals are out there if you wait. I just got an excellent 6906 for $385. No box or papers, but round trigger guard and all stainlees trigger and hammer.

A decent gun is gonna set you back $500. Would i pay a tiny bit more for a gun that is like new but no longer made? Yep. S&W is the only manufacturer that has the four things I want in a semi auto. No plastic, hammer fired, manual safety, and mag disconnect. I would sell two Glocks to buy one third gen.

That being said, I have a Shield. It fits the conceal carry purpose. If I can find a stainless CS9 in like new condition, the Shield will be sold.

Post of the day.

Prices im seeing on 3rd gen Smiths are about the same as they were pre panic. On avg they are in the $350-$400 range with a few odd ones being in the $500 range. This is on 9, 40 and 45 and span from compacts to TSW to full size.

Within the last 6 months I bought 2 45s. 4563TSW for just over $400 and 4566 DAO just under $400. Both prices are + tax and bg check. I had to let a few slide by because I cant just buy them all when I run into them. The ones I let slide were a 4006 and 5906 TSW with rails @ $450ea. Another gun store just got a 411 for $399. A bit high for that model imo but it does have practically a new set of night sights.

Don't be discouraged.

The deals are out there.

In June I picked up a 1006, gun only (98%) with 2 magazines for $475.00.

In July I picked up a 4567, gun only (4566 with black slide and night sights)
(90% with some holster wear on the slide and frame),
with 3 magazines, for $300.00.

Third gens are out there. It just takes a bit of patience to find them.

How about this ?

I happened into a 6906 a month or so ago, in really good shape, but with no magazines. Got it for $320.xx, tax included. I really didn't need it and was actually looking for a more compact pistol for carry. I also have a 6904, in beat up shape, but a great shooter (my EDC). The lack of mags didn't bother me, as I have plenty for my 6904. It had the dreaded CAI import mark, though felt in operation almost as if it was new.

Anyway, as I said, I didn't need it. I decided to sell it off and find a small 9mm for carry (I am really tired of carrying the 6904 right now). Placed an ad, got ONE response.....and almost had to fight the guy to get my money back out of the 6906....and I was including two magazines with it. He harped endlessly on the "CAI mark" and it's effect in destroying the "collector value".....even though he wanted the gun as a carry piece.

We finally made a deal.....and I got my money out of it, less the cost of one magazine. Like pulling teeth, to get a fair price for one of the best pistols in it's class ever made. Before I placed the ad, I happened to ask a gun dealer what he'd give me for it..... $175 was the best they'd do. He told me that, around here, the 6906 wouldn't "go for more than $250"....and also referenced the CAI mark.

The point of the story is, location will make a big difference, as will small details, unrelated to the condition and quality of the gun in question. Everyone wants something for nothing. I'll bet that 6906 is on Gunbroker right now for $500, or something like that. My attitude has not soured on S&Ws, not at all, but it IS soured on guns in general, at this juncture.

I've got what I want and need - I like all three pistols that I now have - and that's it. I'm done.

"I like all three pistols that I now have - and that's it. I'm done."

I travel with more guns than you own, LOL!! Unlike you, I do not seem to be satisfied with just a few handguns. I like to play with something different every so often. It is an illness to me.

mbliss hit the nail on the head. For whatever reason here in the Midwest Smith autos just don't go for insane prices...yet.
My last purchase was a 3913NL for $399 with night sights!
For anybod in the area, there's a gun show Sept.24 & 25 at the Belleville, Il. Fairgrounds. I've seen at least 5-10 Smith autos there of various generations, plus a few original 59s for like $300! I'll be there hunting a 5943 and a 4046 I saw last time.

Same herecin SE Pa. Yesterdays gun show had plenty of 3rd gen Smiths at down to earth prices but no one is buying them. I even tried to sell one to several dealers who had signs reading"WE BUY GUNS". No takers not even a counter offer

Hey Perf,

I am partially to blame, so let me tell you my side of it; the buyer side.
I bought my first smith auto sometime in the late 70's. Thats when my love affair began. In the last few years as my income has risen so has my standard of a used gun. A couple of years ago I bought a 1006 CHP commemorative for around $850. That was over market without a doubt. Why? It was mint. I had to have it. I really only buy the LNIB stuff nowadays and for me the condition is so important that paying 1, 2, or $300 more in the long run means nothing to me, because I will have those guns till I die.
So, I guess you could call this an apology, for I am feeding the high price fires.

Humbly, fuzzy.

I'd like to see those prices around here. In my area 3rd Gen's are extremely rare. I don't recall ever seeing one on the shelf in a LGS. The exception is big stores like Cabela's and Gander Mountain selling very used police trade in 9mm's and .40's for outlandish prices. All the ones I've seen are over priced by about $250. Sometimes I wonder if stores don't price these guns high to encourage people to buy new tupperware...

Depends on the store and locale. One local store had a used 4506 in like-new condition with one mag for just shy of $800 (I can't find the listing on their site, now, so maybe they sold it). Another store had a 4006 for $479, also like new with one mag. Two different models, so I understand that if one is more desirable it will go for more, but that is quite a price difference.

Prices

Believe me I'm not happy about it, but I live in California.
Here we have a roster of acceptable guns and anything not listed is only available used and as a Private Party Transfer (PPT). *

A S&W 422 became available on GunBroker
1. Owned by an individual, so acceptable for a PPT.
2. Offered for sale within CA by the owner, lots wont.
3. Within travelling distance. Buyer (me) has to make two trips to the FFL. One for paperwork and One for pickup ten days later.

Very few guns for sale meet all of these critera..... You bet I paid a premium and forced up the price.

Got me a really nice 99% 422 for $440
Spent way too much, but not much choice in these parts.

Barry

* Yes I know about SSE in CA. Do you know anyone that will SSE a S&W 422/622/2206?
