Was at the Fort Worth Gun Show today. Found a 6" Model 28, that had been modified. It had a N prefaced serial number. It had a 4X scope mounted, the rear sight was removed. The guy wanted $750.00 and I passed.

What say you members? Be honest, I can take it.

Hard to say without seeing the gun, but I think this second guessing and regret happens frequently. Yesterday at a gun show I balked on a mint M29-5 with 5" barrel in excellent condition that appeared unfired. No box and asking price was $975. I went back today for a second look possibly to buy and it was gone. Seller told me it went minutes after I looked at it. Damn, snooze, I lose.

What was the modification? More than removing the factory sites?

I'd decide by knowing the value of a non molested gun, then add the cost of a fix to the asking price. If it's less than a non molested, you can buy it knowing you got a deal.

It had been drilled and tapped for the scope mount, along with the rear sight removed.

I suspect the 28 was showing signs of maltreatment. I would wonder how many hot handloads had been but through that one? Good walk-away

Scruffy, the ones that get away you were just not meant to have, but you still have the money for the next deal.

Well, this was a lost opportunity I believe. I have a 29-5 classic DX 5", and only 200 were made in 1992. The 29-5 is supposed to be the high water mark for the M29

I would have bought that Model 28 in a heartbeat. Rear sights pop up on eBay often enough and if you don't like the scope it will most likely bring enough money to pay for the rear sight. As far as the drill and tap goes it's really a non issue once the rear sight goes back on.
