The debate my be academic, because despite the obvious benefits of the venerable Crown Vic, if missus P&R Fan isn't happy...,
The Police Service here went from Dodge Diplomats and Plymouth Grand Fury's to the Ford Crown Vic. And with a brief and ill fated look at the Chevy Caprice, we never looked back.
The Chief liked them so much he bought and stored 300 of them when production stopped in St. Thomas. Gratefully, my cruiser was replaced with one of those rather than the new Taurus.
I'll end my career this year in one, but like Old Corp said I could never own one because I've spent too much time with them already.
No Caprice? Really? They were great cars for that kind of work. Good reliable cars. The unpopular 4.3 was even tougher than the 5.7. That 4.3 could take a wallop. We had a cabbie who used one. Something happened and his car overheated. He drove from Philadelphia International Airport to us, that's a 42 mile trip on an engine that was way in the red. He got the problem fixed and continued on his way. Nothing happened to the engine or head gaskets. I've seen them come in with holes in the oil pan, shot radiators, and so much more and those engines just kept trucking along!
