Is it possible to make a 632 target with 5 inch barrel.

This would be used for PPC (wife has small hands). It will be used with 32 longs mostly.

Real question is what would it take? Does one start with a M60 and get a new cylinder and barrel or a 632 target and rebarrel?

What components need to be replaced?

Ultimatly the barrel would a bull barrel douglas with barricade wings.

Sounds crazy but this is what I want.

This needs to be a six shooter or I would have her using a 38. The K frames are too large for her.

Any help?

Off the top of my head I can't think of any 5" J-frame barrels in any caliber, so I think starting with a 632 or 631 will be expensive and time-consuming with all the custom work involved.

Probably easier to get a 1930's era .32 Regulation Police with a six inch barrel, cut an inch off, and have postwar target sights mounted to it. You won't be able to shoot anything longer than .32 Long, but it sounds like that might be all that's required anyway. If you want a bright gun, have it refinished in nickel.

If you insist on a stainless frame, I don't think you can easily get to where you want to go from here.

Nice idea, but are you sure?
Getting your hands on match barrel blanks in .32 might be difficult enough, but it is possible. You might be able to use a rifle barrel in .311.
I would go for .38 Special. If you want the .32 to hit something at 50 yards the recoil could actually feel worse from a .32 than a .38 with light WC loads.
The worst problem you will encounter is getting good speed loaders for the .32. HKS works, but if you want a spring loaded type I'm not even sure there is one for a 6 shoot J-frame. The only one i know of for K and L-frames are the all metal version of the German SL Variant, but they come at a price. Here in Europe it's about 125$ a piece !

Building on a K-frame and using a open back strap Master II grip in size small from Nill will fit small hands. You can even send Nill a drawing of the hand and they will do their best.

Theoretically you could take a current model 632 and install a rebored 5" barrel from the model 63-5 Kit Gun (no longer made). A Hamilton Bowen project in the making, if you have several stacks of bills with (Alexander) Hamiliton to spend :) .

still want one

My wife's carry gun is a snubby 632 fixed sights. We have two HKS speed loaders for this. Speed loaders should not be trouble.

My current wood's carry gun is a 5 inch M60 with adj sights in .357. It is a dream to shoot easy to handle with one hand. (38 loads mostly) She likes the feel and can easily reach trigger and maintain proper grip, with a K frame this is not possible.

The 38 in a J frame is only 5 rounds and we need 6 for the local ppc fun. So I was wondering if a new barrel could be installed on a 632? Douglas barrel has blanks in 32, is this different for a handgun vs a rifle?

I was thinking of having a custom barrel turned to fit the little J frame install baricade wings on it and perhaps a red dot? Granted this would be a strange animal, but bet it would be accurate and fun to shoot. New shooters would feel zero recoil with a bull barrel and 32 wad cutter load.

Thoughts?

My wife has small hands so I know the problem...and i forgot that the 632 has six shoots...

Yes! It would be possible, and it's no more work needed than on any other PPC gun.
Aristocrat even make (or used to make) a 5" sight rib.
How cool wouldn't it be to get some nice PPC style grips made for a J-frame.
A Douglas barell with a twist from 1:10 to 1:14 would do just fine for .32 wadcutter loads

Baricade wings on a PPC gun ?

We shoot in a PPC league, actually it has evolved a bit. Some of the original shooters where bianchi shooters years ago and they started locking the barrel against the baricades, using wings affixed to barrel or sight base.

With a little practice the baricade shots are almost always x's and 10's. We shoot out to 25 yards all indoors.

This league is where my wife started shooting. She began with a 22, once she started cleaning the course she moved into centerfire but has yet to have a revolver that she can handle.

Something like this? (Photoshop)

Espen,

Yes kinda like that.

Only omit the bottom barrel weight and add a bianchi style finger stop.

Omit the sights and add a custom sight base fastend to top strap.

Then tap top of barrel and install Bianchi style barricade wings.

Those Nills are exactly what I have on my 686 (which is dressed out like above description).

Thanks for opinions,

What twist barrel?

Whose blank?

Can someone make a recommendation as to a smith?

I only need barrel, my local guy can install and do stops, wings, etc.

If I go with a new S&W M632 ($695including shipping at Budsgunshop.com). This would leave me with the 327 mag for making power factor if needed. But will likely be used with 32 longs and mostly wac cutter loads.

You could get close (within an inch) with a 631 kit gun, some were made with a 4" barrel and adjustable sights. Kind of pricey though, there is one on Gunbroker right now starting at about $1050, I believe.

I have a 631, 632, and 16, shoot .32 longs thru all of them, kind of like shooting a .22 as far as recoil goes.

They were all K frame guns but Bill Davis made a 32 6" slabside PPC revolver, a friend of mine had one from the 4Queens match years ago and Ive seen them on other forums, My wife shot PPC for years I took a sande to a set of Davis PPC grips and worked them down to where they fit her hands. I dont know if you can get six 32 cal. bullets to fit in a J frame cylinder if you can Bowen could do it. I would get one of the 6" 16-4s that you see for sale and then work to make the grip portion smaller even if you reshape the metal portion they normally are around 900.00 and you wouldnt need any other custom work ,if you wanted the barrel heavier add a aristocrat metal rib. Good luck Bob

Sorry! That is a pure fantasy revolver made from different pictures in Photoshop.

...but, if Happy Hunter came in to my shop I would say YES to that job.
Never built a "race-gun" on a J-frame, but it's just that kind of job you can't say no too. Unfortunately I'm not exactly Happy Hunter's next door neighbor.

You can find a couple of my "real" revolvers in this post http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-competitive-shooting/132645-ppc-revolver-pics.html

On topic again...
I don't think you can be picky about the choice of barrel for this project.
I have never seen anything but the best from Douglas, so that would be my choice. A twist rate of 1:14 would be some kind of "middle of the road" if yo also want to shoot the .327 Fed. Mag.
To be honest twist rate and revolvers is not that important. If you do all the mathematic it is actually pretty ridiculous

Back in the old days over here, the guys used a piece from a German MG-42 barrel on their revolvers, and it work great. As you know the German's left in a hurry in '45 and forgot some equipment...
