Seems the debate in 617 /17 circles has always come down to weight and balance. Given S&W's line of (new and used) .22 revolvers seems to still be in great demand, lets take the next step. How about a 617 Pro series. Use the same K frame , add factory action tuning but go with a 686 pro style 5" tapered and shaved barrel with recessed crown. Give it a interchangeable front sight with a Fiber optic standard. Relieve the cylinder mouths for easier loading with a speed loader. Delete the fluting, bead blast the finish and add a set of laser etched laminated wood grips. I'm in!

Or....bring back the original Combat stocks or Targets.

Insp Callahan here has one of the 6" export models that went to Germany. Basically the configuration you wish, but a six inch barrel. I agree...a sweet 617.

Sorry S&W

Looks like the folks at Ruger read this forum.
They have just introduced a new 10 shot ,.22 rimfire on their stainless GP100 frame.

Very similar weight and size to the 617 but has 1/2 lug 5.5" barrel, FO front sight. Owning one of their like designed GP100 Match Champion models myself, I am thinking that they may have done this right. No doubt the 617 will have a slight edge in finish and trigger behavior but this could be the first serious market challenge the 617 has seen in many a decade.
