Can anyone give me guidance on a barrel that will have the same shape/profile as a mountain gun in blue steel that will mate up to my 29?
I really like the look of the 629-mountain gun but prefer blue over stainless.
Thanks for the help

M24 barrel, but it’ll be stamped .44 SPL

S&W made blue M29 Mountain Guns. You need a barrel for one.

You might check with the factory to see if they have one in stock. A M24 barrel would fit, but you would have to shorten the rear of the barrel.

Good luck!

There are several 29-8’s on Gunbroker right now but they aren’t Mountain Guns. Did they make a version of that Model that was? I have a 629 Mountain Gun but would love to have a blue one

It was there, now gone. Do a search, they were made but it may take some hunting to find one.

I no longer own this one, but it's a 29-8 MG. The main issue is it's so pretty I didn't want to carry it.

Don’t know if it will help you or not but Tyler Gun Works in Texas has perfected a process for bluing stainless. He can slick up your action while he has it too.

There were actually three model 29 mountain gun - all of them 29-8 iterations.

This gun is one of one thousand produced for Talo. This is the second iteration of the Model 29 Mountain Gun, please note that it uses the 3-screw frame. The first was a stocking dealer special, but built on the 4-screw Classic frame. Smith had not used the 3-screw carbon steel frame (nickel & blued) since ca. 2000. Speculation is that these frames were “found” and Smith elected to use them for the special Talo run.

Additional research has revealed that there is a third iteration of the 29-8 Mountain Gun. This a limited run for exclusive sale by Cabela’s. Pure speculation on my part, but I believe this was a way for Smith to dispose of the production overrun from the Talo 29-8’s as these are also built on the three-screw frame. In support of this is that the alphabetic serial prefix for the Cabela’s guns follows the Talo guns (CRY on my Talo and CTU on one example of the Cabela’s gun). The two guns are identical in all respects except two. The Cabela’s guns have the inscription “Outfitter Series” within a spread of elk antlers, laser etched on the side plate and they use a S&W branded Hogue rubber monogrip in place of the Talo Altamonts – both differences easily accomplished at minimal cost. Dependent on the number of three-screw frames available at the time, the Cabela’s version may be the rarest of the three.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I have the 29-8 and I bought it new in Tx but didn’t see any mention of Talo or Cabelas’, but it is a 3 screw with those same horrible brown wood grips that say mountain on the bottom and…it cam with a 2nd set of also S&W rubber grips(not Hogue mono grip) and also an abomination on the grips for two tries I guess- I purchased some beautiful non finger groove grips like from post 8 but like I mentioned no finger grooves. I am real happy with accuracy and the attention to detail, it is very tight and clean, the bluing is also a bit deeper like that from post 8….mine does obviously have the lock hole which annoys me but hasn’t otherwise affected my life. Cheers and good luck

There was another 4" narrow rib blue .44 Magnum and IMO the high water mark in the 29-6 SWCA Embellished commemorative run.
They are pre IL and have grooved tangs,
IIRC there were some guns sold from that run that were not embellished.
Only problem with owning one is they are too pretty to shoot.
Ps if you would like to see one here is an internet link

Thank you all for the input and information.
I think I am going to stay away from the IL guns, I have had 2 in the past and couldn't get used to the look. really like blue, pre lock, look and in 44 mag.
going to keep looking for .............
Thanks again

If you do not want one with an IL you have a difficult task ahead.

Options:
A, buy a blue IL gun and swap barrels onto another frame.

( be advised the factory often prefers to cut the barrel when doing swaps to save the frame from damage so they may not accept the work, if you pay a gunsmith you run the risk of twisting the frame if it's really tight.)

B, buy a SS MG and have it black coated.
C, keep watching the auction sites for a embellished or non embellished 29-6 which will not say "Mountain Gun" on the barrel but will have all the same features.
