I have a 2017 RAM 2500. Rear bumpers on these things are ****. Can't even take a minor bump without getting ruined. Anybody got any experience with any of the aftermarket more heavy duty rear bumpers? I'm not an off-roader. This is my work truck but I wouldn't mind putting an off-road style on it if it is more heavy-duty.

Do you have a step bumper or dress bumper?

You could go down to the local fabrication/machine/welding shop. Get a chunk of square or rectangular cross section structural steel and have a couple of brackets made and cap the ends. 3/16-1/4 inch wall thickness ought to do the job.

You might want to check the state inspection/Motor Vehicle Code about bumper height requirements.

My son built his own and on each side he cut out the ram head with a laser and mounted lights in back of them and he had the bumper coated with that stuff they spray on the beds, the only problem he had with it was, everywhere he went people were blowing their horns, wanting him to pull over, asking him where he got it.

Around Texas you hardly see a stock bumper on any truck! You should be able to find one that appeals to your taste. Sure would hate to be hit by some one who has one,it would do a lot of damage. I am a little surprised some lawyers haven’t jumped on them for being too dangerous.

UPSIDE/DOWNSIDE

YES the big beefy bumpers, etc can take a licking, BUT you become the crumple zone & absorb much more shock if in a collision. I was left disabled, the big bumper fared much better than me. :(

I checked out their web-site. I just might be contacting these guys. Shipping might be expensive from the Northwest to the Northeast though. :)

I read this thread-wondering why you were looking to buy Vs build.

Got the answer:) As long as your busy due to good reasons, buying and bolting is a good option!

Enjoy the holiday, Dave

I miss the old truck type bumpers that had a center hole for a ball.
I could backup my boat with no problems.
Today with the "Tube" unit it is harder to back up, due to shifting parts.

On my hand made Heavy Duty bumper I had two vertical plates added.......
that kept other autos at bay or let others know that they parked TOO close to me.

Today's trucks are more yuppie cars than anything else.......Ford/Chevy sells way more trucks and and suv's than cars. Ford announced they are eliminating most of their car product in the future....Lots of trucks nthese days are NEVER DRIVEN ON DIRT or haul a "real" load of stuff.
My son's Sierra has among other things, heated steering wheel & seats, electric sun roof. Electric sliding rear window. Auto steering assist.........NO WAY he'd haul a load of watermelons in that!

I put a Tough Country winch bumper on the front of my truck and I am very glad I did. I hit a deer at 55 and never hurt the truck. I got it from Peacemaker bumpers. They sell rear bumpers as well. They also have a scratch and dent section you might want to check out.

Since you live in the northeast they suggest you have the bumper coated with bed liner. I did mine with 3 spray cans of $30 bed liner spray. It looks great and you can't tell I ever hit a deer with it. Whatever bumper you go with make sure to coat it with a good bed liner spray.

I just looked on their website and they are running a sale for front and rear bumpers as a package deal. These are well made and serious bumpers. I hope you check it out. Be advised they are not cheap but then again anything of value rarely is. How much is your life worth?

Now days, whatever your bumper doesn't absorb, your frame has to. I don't like it either, but it is a system. With the backup cameras and avoidance alerts, it's not easy to ding a rear bumper.
