I Went To The Old Famous "Christy's Gunworks" Again Today

It's now an antique mall. I checked it out before but this time asked the lady if there is actually an underground gun range there and she said said there is. It's a dark, spooky, cavernous place, she said, with bullet holes everywhere. But no boxes of old gun parts laying around (yeah, I asked). It was interesting checking out the place where Elmer Keith, Skeeter Skelton, and scores of other famous and not so famous people had there sixguns rebuilt. And where Colt Single Action replacement barrels and cylinders were once manufactured. Some of which find there way into our hands now.

I live by them when they were open had them put a scope on my 30-40 Krag. Also helped close the Old Sacramento Armory when they went out of business. Ed is renting the place to an art studio I think.

I drive by the old Sac. Armoury building once and a while but never noticed what it is now. What a shame that place closed. A real old time gunshop. they even marketed/imported holsters and stuff with various company names. Last year I was at a Sac. gunshow and an old guy with a young couple there were selling gun stuff. someone said the old guy owned the Sac. Armory. He was pretty shaky but sharp and a nice guy. He gave me a pair of Colt Cobra grips. The other people got mad at him like he was senile and I took advantage of him. But he was on top of things and was just being nice. They were kind of protecting him, I think.

Another mark on the calendar of life. You hate to see those types of places gone and replaced by Gander and Cabela type stores.

All too true. But one day, places like Bass, Gander and Cabela will be another generations historic and nostalgic sites for firearm and outdoor adventures.

Evidently Ed had trouble with ATF selling Timberwolf 357 & 44 pump rifles. Something about the import marks I think. When he first opened Old Sac Armory on 16th & W I bought a spam can of 30-06 A.P. in bandoliers & 8 round M-1 Clips. I miss his shop. he had a going away party the last day he was in business. Great guy.

Branden Guns and Dick Scherer's reloading shop on Folsom Blvd
which are all long gone now.

Old Sac Armory was a nice place to shop and browse.
I bought my 1st S&W revolver there in 1981.
It is my Avatar...my S&W 586 L-Frame 4" no dash.

Then in 1982 I bought a 586 L-Frame 6" no dash.
In 1984 I bought my S&W 559 9mm and S&W 469 9mm from Old Sac Armory.

The last few weeks before Old Sac Armory closed, I bought my S&W 3913, and
S&W 3906 on 09/11/07; and my Ruger GP100 6" Blue .357mag on 10/04/07 before they closed shop.

I tried to buy the S&W 6906 on the final sale day, but Gary behind the counter decided to buy it.

There was a great guy who worked at the Armory named dick, a real big who I think was an ex-cop and was heavily into cowboy shooting. He had some great hardware at the cowboy shoots.
