I wonder where this will take us in the name of road safety

:D I do not live that far away from a well hit bridge in Glenville NY. What you said appears to be the biggest reason it gets hit so much. Those sad excuses for a truck driver, English is not their first or perhaps not even their second language. There are more than enough signs and warnings present that Stevie Wonder could tell a low bridge is ahead and to turn around.

Then the so called driver gets out of his now wrecked truck dressed in sweats and flip flops muttering in some unintelligible language what the hell happened. In the mean time the road is closed in both directions for hours and hundreds of drivers are forced to find alternate routs!

OH yea, I hadnt even thought of the bridges. Our centuries old covered bridges are getting destroyed by drivers that cant read.

I have often heard that variation of speed among the vehicles on the road is the greatest cause for accidents.
Millions, maybe billions of dollars are spent on speed limit signs that most just ignore.
Even most cops ignore them or there would be a lot more tickets issued.

Simple, the problem are Dumb, Stupid Ignorant drivers. Drivers Ed used to be Mandatory in order to get a license, guess its discriminatory these days? Drivers on their cell phones are also a huge problem. Talk about a breath analyzer there needs to be a cell phone blocker Unless one has blue tooth. Also all todays driver know is GPS directions, none, and I mean NONE can read a map let alone have any maps…..
Suggest one look up getting a drivers license in Germany and no I’m not suggesting we adopt their policy, just for your entertainment….

Ah It's not only the drivers on cell phones. Watched a gal walk in front of a bus looking/talking/texting on her phone. Only hit her a little bit. Good bus driver. A cop even saw it happen

Driving is a Privilege, not a Right.

At last, somebody brave enough to say it out loud. We've got another guy in town who recently killed a cyclist. Metro didn't even ticket him for no NV license until a dashcam video emerged of his reckless driving.

If you want to get properly mad, read about his jailhouse interview. TL;DR version can be summed up by the fact his temporary tag ran out in March and by this quote.

“I have to live my life,” Hopkins said about driving. “I have to try to make something happen. I have a wife. I have a kid. I’m a godparent, man. I’m a father that works. I have to do something, I can’t just be a sitting duck just because I don’t have a license, do you understand me, sir?”

Yeah, buddy, you do have to make something happen, like paying your fines, here and anywhere else you probably owe. I bet he cannot get a license because he owes another state.

'I wasn't supposed to be driving,' Las Vegas man ticketed 19 times before fatal crash describes self as good driver

Would have given a like but this type of story most likely happens in every state/ commonwealth as the courts seems just not to give a damn. Sadly many LEO’s dont write tickets as they know they will be tossed out once in court, they just don’t want the hassle of doing their job and get “ shown the door” in court. There needs to be a nation wide Change. Brake the law(s) and you will pay. Prison/ jails need to be a place to punish, not a “ club” …..

Carp. If that happens I'm taking the motorcycle everywhere. I used to drive one year round- snow, sleet, rain and I'll do it again before I'll let the nanny state dictate how I'll drive.
