There are a lot of ICBM sites in Montana (and Wyoming).
I happened to be in Great Falls one time, having dinner at
a local dining place. Seated at the next table were two men
who were obviously connected, in some way, to the ICBM
sites. As I overheard their conversation I thought to myself,
it's a good thing I'm not a Russian or Chinese spy.

Maybe they were and just putting out counter intelligence. :)

Obviously bad OPSEC.

I had a similar experience after retiring from the Air Force. I was eating at a fast food joint and overheard two contractors talking about Space Command being moved to STRATCOM and all the infrastructure changes, clearances, and security that would be required for that.

After I finished lunch, I called OSI and made an appointment to let them know what I overheard. Lets just say they were quite interested in what I had to say.

One day we were all summoned to a surprise battalion formation. The battalion commander announced that we were going to delpoy two weeks later for a week-long field training excercise. He launched into what could best be described as a threatening rant, lecturing us about how we were not to say a word about it, except that the married troops could tell their spouses when we were leaving and when we'd be back. Any violation of opertional security would be dealt with swiftly and severely.

Two days later I was geting my haircut in an off-post barbershop a lot of us used when the barber started telling me about all the details of our impending adventure.

I suspected that the leaker was a certain young lieutenant in my company. But it really didn't matter. A couple of days after that, the post newspaper published a detailed front page article about the upcoming deployment, courtesy of the battalion PIO.

3 Letters

When I was in the Air Force, everything seemed to be hush-hush.
One time my folks got a letter from me saying "I can't tell you
where I am, but yesterday I shot a polar bear. Couple of weeks
later they received another letter saying "I can't tell you where I
am, but last night I danced with a Hula Girl. 2 more weeks later
they received a third letter. It said "I had to go to the Doctor today.
He told me I should have danced with the polar bear and
shot the Hula Girl.
