Dear Colleagues, I have just bought a Marlin 1881 lever action gun in cal. 40-60, with 20" barrel . I am afraid that the barrel had been cutt, because only 4 of them were made. The SN is 16082 and I would like know, when the gun was made and shipped. I would appreciate any help. Many thanks in advance, Jan.

to 35Rem and other colleagues as well, thanks for Your advice. I am going thrugh marlinowners.com forum, but unfortunately I am still not able to make any registration to that forum owing to allegedly not corresponding my Czech Email address which is however valid for this Smith and Wesson forum. So that is why I would like to ask here on our forum.
Could somebody else be so kind and ask on behalf me on Marlinowners.com forum for factory dates concerning Marlin 1881 lever action rifle, serial No. 16082 ? I am very curious if it had been realy shipped with 20" octagonal barrel. Many thanks for your kind help, Jan.

According to a survey of the records, your gun shipped in 1887. Take that with a grain of salt.
Marlin Manufacture Dates

As Bill Bates suggested, you can get a letter from the Cody Firearms museum.

I assume it has a full length magazine? Post a close up photo of the muzzle and magazine tube hanger.

Checked my book for ya. Says approximately 20,000 made and barrels were 28 inch octagon as as standard. No breakdown on how many produced in each caliber however.

Thank You all for a quick replies. My Marlin has a full magazine tube hanger. I will contact the Cody Firearms Muzeum for a letter, because of getting more details, mostly concerning the lenghts of the barrel. Best regards, Jan.

photos will be definitely asked for on any forum to help identify the gun and features.

I could ask on marlinowners, but they will want as much information as they can get and detailed photos.

Got a pretty rare bird there in that caliber. Ashame if the barrel has been cut as it would be worth big bucks if unaltered in good shape. Love to know how many were produced in that caliber. Probably not many.

Hallo Mauser9, by the way I have got Gewehr88 as well. For Your info, there had been made 6.261 pcs in cal 40-60 from the approximately 20.000 totally made Marlins 1881. I was successful at the end and registered to Marlinowners.com. Now awaiting for activation, than I will ask for Factory records if any. Best regards Jan.

Thanks for the info. Of that number made in 40-60 I bet not many floatin around today. Must be one hefty rifle! Nice to hear you got a Gewehr 88. Being fairly new did not know how many mil-surp fans we had here but will try to post my 98k father brought back from overseas. Great to have some collectibles.
