Identify a .357

I have a .357 # S309880 with a barrel length of 213 mm (8.38") - does anyone know what this is? Thanks Bogey002

Welcome! The only gun with that serial number and barrel length in .357 would be a model 27-2. This should be stamped on the frame under where the barrel threads in with the action open. It was probably made in 1968.

Based only on the SN of S309880, and without pictures,
S305,000 – S329,999……Late 1968 – Early 1969 (Production)
Likely to be a Model 27-2 (or a 28-2), but that should be stamped inside the yoke, so no need to guess.

Welcome to the Forum. I'm pretty sure it must be a Model 27-2 because I don't believe that S&W ever made a Model 28-2 with 8-3/8" bbl. Open the cylinder of your revolver, and look at the barrel cavity where the yoke fits. The model and serial number should be stamped there. You have a very desirable S&W .357 Magnum, and depending upon its condition, a valuable firearm.

I joked about it above, but there have been a tiny number of special order 28 long tubes that have surfaced. SCSW 4th states less than 100 produced.

I dont think the OP's gun needs refinishing but i did have Fords Custom redo my 28-2 and was very pleased with the results. Not cheap nor fast but I think the gun looks great
