Hi folks, and thanks for the forum--this looks like just what I'm looking for.

First up, I have a pistol to identify. I'm not S&W savvy enough to be sure what frame I'm dealing with, and I'd like to get the right inserts for some testing on a Ransom rest.

This is a stainless finish, 22LR (6 shot) revolver.
Barrel is 6"
No model number I can find using the very detailed instructions the forum provides.
SN is CEC5xxx
Adjustable sights.
Has a strain screw.

I received this pistol from S&W in exchange for a 6" blued finish 22lr I got as a gift, which did not shoot well. This was around the late 80s.

Thanks in advance for your consideration!

Most likely a Model 617, but you say it's unmarked?

Open the cylinder. Look on the frame, beneath where the barrel comes thru. The model number should be inscribed there. Ignore any numbers or markings on the yoke (the part that flops out with the cylinder).

It's not unknown for guns to be mismarked or unmarked. A 6-inch, full lug, .22 LR, has gotta be a M617.

CEC means it shipped in 2000. So, it's relatively new, but old enough to be pre-lock.
