this is a picture of my grandfather when he was young. He was born in 1890. My aunt gave me this picture at church today and didn't have any idea when it was taken.

Anyone have a good guess what model/year this old car is?

thanks in advance,
Lee

Mid to late '30s GM, possibly a Buick?

Every car or truck I ever knew him or my grandmother to drive was a Chevy. I kept his old 1950 Chevy truck for a long time after he died and then gave it to my nephew. He cleaned it up and painted it purple metal flake and a white top. Could have killed him!

I cant ID it but it looks like one my grandpa drove me out to go trout fishing in.
I was under five years-old but still remember the old car and the fishing trip.

37 chevy, Looks a little low in the back and are those truck tires?

they might be truck tires. He lived in the country all of his life and his old cars and trucks probably had more dirt road miles than highway miles. He also was a farmer and had about 100 head of cows when I was a wee lad.

I can remember him shifting gears in the old 1950 truck and shifting from 1st to 3rd when he didn't have a load in/on it. Saving gas I guess???????????? Grandma did the same thing until she got a "car without a clutch" in 1974 I think it was and I think it had a 350 in it. She was used to a 230 or 250 six cylinder and was terribly upset that she had to fill it up ever 2 months or so.

Grandpa never had a tractor either. He used teams of mules to do his plowing and harvesting. Lordy at the memories I have from the days of the mules.

Okay here is the simple all telling tip off. That crease down the side body that goes down a slanted angle behind the front fender is unique to just the 37 chev.

My Dad was still doing that in 2001.

At least it's still in the family no matter what the color.

Close..but no cigar. I spent a couple of my high school years cruising in a '37 Chevy, and that ain't the way I remember it. I believe it to be a 1938 Chevrolet. Similar body style to the 1937 but the grill and the hood side trim is 1938.

I'm still doing so in 2009' Iggy!
It's called "skip shifting". And also is still used quite often by tractor trailer drivers when either empty or running bobtail.
And Feral (as usual) is correct on the pedigree.

I frequently skip gears in my truck when appropriate. Saves pushing in the clutch that one time... 158K and still on original clutch.
