Welcome to the forums from the Wiregrass, Steve! It's a .38 Military & Police revolver, post WWII. It is an ancestor of the Model 10 which technically began in 1899 but received numerous engineering changes from that year until the Model 10 was launched in 1958. Jim is correct that it is the model just previous to the pre-Model 10 which was launched in 1948. Of course, S&W didn't call it that. To them it was the .38 M&P.

Yes, it's a post-WWII .38 Military & Police revolver built on the pre-war long action. The "S" serial number prefix signifies that it has the internal hammer block safety.

Thanks for the quick replies Jim, Wiregrassguy, and S&WChad. I appreciate the feed back. I have gone thru 10 S&W revolvers so far and got 4 more to go. Thanks again.

As others have stated, this is an immediate postwar .38 Military & Police revolver. Guns with serial numbers in the S830xxx range were shipping in June 1946. This one appears to be wearing stocks that are bit newer than the gun. They are from the 1953-1967 period.

I'm 3 years into a research project on these revolvers and you could help by posting the complete serial number. Or you could send it me in a PM if you want privacy.

Thanks.
