Is there an aftermarket tinker who makes IDPA-legal things such as racking ears, longer radius sights, etc. for the 5906, etc.?

First no, not that I'm aware of.

Second that sort of stuff is either not allowed or not needed. If you need to trick out a gun to shoot well you need to be a better shot.

Isn't that part of the reason of getting into competitive shooting in the first place, to be a better shooter?? As long as " tricking out your gun" conforms to the particular shooting associations guide lines what difference does it make, as long as in the end it helps you to become" a better shot" ?

It makes a difference because too many shooters think they can buy an add on/accessary and the equipment will make them a better shot.

The money spent on gadgets would be better spent on ammo and range time. There is no shortcut to being a better shot.

My suggestion would be to log on the IDPA website and see what really is allowed and what is not....not only with the gun but with the holsters, pouches, cover garment etc.

Randy

PS. I am an IDPA member and competitor. Much of the gear is oriented to what you would actually carry. If you want to go all tricked out then USPSA is the better choice, and I am also a member and competitor in USPSA as well.

3rd Gens have been out of production for so long that finding plain old stock parts is bad enough unto themselves... let alone "race gun" parts.

The slide mounted safety/decocker levers makes it problematic for "slide racking ears" to be installed. They would need to be incorporated into a rear sight design like this one that isn't being made for 3rd Gens that I'm aware of.

I would use your 5906 "AS IS" in IDPA with a good quality holster and belt, two additional mag pouches, a cover jacket/vest etc. and have a blast. (Same with shooting it in USPSA Production class. I usually will have a minimum of 6 magazines for any semi auto I use...USPSA allows more than 2 magazines on your belt IDPA does not.)

Your 5906 is WELL suited in its stock form and will serve you very well!

I like that one, too.

The one I've been noodling has the ears up front (right over the rear sight dovetail). The aperture hangs over the rear of the slide 1/8th inch or so (for the longest possible sight radius) and is 'goalpost' lined rather than marked with a pair of dots.
