I have an Uncle Mikes nylon OWB pouch type that I was advised not to bring back. The top rolled while re-holstering, near/on the trigger guard.

I also have a Kydex by Fobes, which the Safety Officer thought held the gun too far off the belt. And as so many of the IDPA rules come down to what the SO thinks, I am not going to use this one.

So, for my SD, what might everyone recommend for an OWB specific to use in IDPA?

Thanks,

You're probably safest going with an OWB pancake holster like the one's on the smith and wesson online store or a Don Hume JIT (least expensive option).

Kydex is the most popular material used for action pistol holsters, and the two most popular brands are Blade-tech (my current choice is the OWB holster with tek-lok) Belt Holster w/TEK-LOK :: OWB Belt Holsters :: Blade-Tech Industries and Comp-Tac. I recommend either of those brands. Be sure to specify that the holster must comply to all IDPA rules. That way the manufacturer, or their distributor, will be sure to send you the proper holster.

One other possibility would be to purchase a "Tek-lok" Small Tek-Lok w/hardware :: Hardware & Attachment Accessories :: Blade-Tech Industries and see if it can be mounted to your current Fobus holster. You would need to remove the current belt loop and replace it with the tech lok. Someone from your local group of IDPA shooters could help you determine if this is a possibility.

I have been using an #3 IWB made by Kramer for IDPA...it is also my most popular carry holster along with my Milt Sparks VM-2's. I like using what I actually carry.
Any high quality IWB is a good choice and is quite legal in IDPA. Some like a retention strap...I don't. I do like horsehide for a leather holster.

Bladetech and Side Armor have some very nice IWB kydex holsters if you like kydex.

PS. The other thing about a good IWB holster is that you are essentially good to go with any CRO, SO, Match Director etc. No hassles from anyone.

The exception there is Steel Challenge, IWB holsters are a no-go. I'm currently used a Ready Tactical holster for my 4" Model 66 from www.cpwsa.com and enjoy it. It holdds the gun a bit higher up than my previous holster and has adjustable tension. The gun clicks into place cleanly and does not snag on anything on the draw.

I loved to shoot idpa but sometimes the rules are silly. How many bajillions of people use Fobus holsters for everyday carry?

Which FOBUS holster do you have? Most FOBUS holsters are IDPA compliant.

If you are using the FOBUS HK1 paddle holster, it is IDPA compliant, provided you wear it properly, that is, with the paddle inside your pants, not just hooked over the belt.

The HK1BH FOBUS is also IDPA compliant, with the proper belt.

If you have the "FOBUS ROTO-holster" with the added offset, that's a problem.

I'm an IDPA match director, and deal with tech inspection routinely.

Thanks,

The OWB that came with my MP full size 9 was made for S&W
by BladeTech and will fit your SD just fine.
I use that holster for IDPA with no issues regarding rule compliance.
Good Luck
