I would just like some input/opinions on if you could only pick one, an S&W model 36 or a S&W model 38 what would be your preference? Provided they were in the same condition of course. Use would be for cc.
I've carried both a 36 and 60, both 2", and eventually got a 642 for the hammer-snag issue. So I'd vote on the 638 if you like it. I think the blued guns are great but I'm afraid I'd scratch up the finish. So for carry I'd suggest stainless.
I simply adore the shrouded hammer J-frames. The first time I saw one, which was seriously a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I thought the Model 38 was the ugliest gun I ever met. Years later I came to really like them, they became hard to find, and I lucked out with a Model 649 - what a gorgeous concealed carry piece that is. Pocket carry. If I didn't also have a lightweight 442 that disappears in my pocket and is so light I barely notice it the 649 would be with me every day.
Model 38 over Model 36, yessirreebob, that's my choice.
I don't make any comments here about condition because if it's not in top condition it's not going in my pocket.
I have a 3" 36, and it is really nice to shoot. I use it with a holster when out and about, but it definately would not be my choice for a pocket model. Go for the 38.
I have two model 36's, both with 2" barrels. I've carried these two for years, and never had an issue with snags and hangups. Of course, I would never carry a gun in my pocket; I always use a pancake holster. As for the model 38, I personally don't like the look (don't hate me 'cause I'm a traditionalist). But if you're going to carry it in your pocket, that might be a better choice.
I have a 36 and it is a great gun but to be honest I prefer my new Ruger LCR in .357. A bit more zip and can fire both calibers. The DAO and no exposed hammer make it snag free and nicer in the pocket.
I prefer a bobbed-hammer Chief Special to a shrouded or concealed hammer model. Hence I'd choose a bobbed model 36 or 60 (see below), or a bobbed 37 if you wanted something a ittle lighter like for pocket carry.
I have a nickel model 38 but it's a safe queen.. if you watch the topics of the forums it's always the same models talked about and the model 38 doesn't come up alot which means it's alot harder to find gun then a model 36 and is starting to show it on GB as for value so if the guns are priced the same and or in great condition, model 38 hands down. also if you look in the S&W 3rd book it doesn't even give production numbers for the model 38 by year.
I have about 9 or 10 Chief Specials of all kinds of vintages.. but mostly Baby Chiefs... and I own 1 model 38. So my choice for a pocket carry would the 36. BUT... that is because I prefer all steel over air weights. SO.... for a true pocket carry (and one I use all the time would be the Model 38 HEAVY the model 49 or 649. MY favorite is the 649-3 with .357 mag capability.
