When I got my DWI almost 20 years ago I knew I would be spending 3 days and nights in jail. It was horrable thinking about it. During these nights of thinking about having to go it came to my head that if I had to go to prison for some lenght of time that I just might consider knocking myself off. Now I know I would not do this if it were for 1 year of prison time but I for sure would do it if it was a life sentence. So, where then would I draw the life line? 5 years, I don't think so, 10 years, I'd consider it seriously, 20 years more then likly, over 20 years at my age of 57............

I'm sure most of you would never consider taking your own life, it is a very selfish thing to do to your spouse & family. I know, there has been quite a few in my family and close friends and it sucks. I guess I wouldn't do it because of my wife but still.

My bosses son was convected of shooting at someone and got a prison sentence, not sure how many years. For some reason they let him spend one night at home with his parents. That night he took his own life.

A good friend of mine from church got in to the mortgage business many years ago and became very sucessful. Had a Lexus, Mercedes, Rolex, beautiful home, beautiful wife, great kids, etc. One day he got a visit from a couple of people who said they worked for the FBI and were investigating a company that he worked for many years ago when he first got into the mortgage business. He only worked there a short time but apparenty this company had done some questionable loans, and several employees were being investigated. The first two weeks my friend worked there, he did some loans he made a very small commission on, but he did not know what he was doing since he was new and only did what he was told. The loans were illegal and after a two year long, expensive, legal battle he had no more money so his attorney plea bargained for 60 days in prison. My friend, his wife, and kids were devastated. He went to jail in Muskogee county, Oklahoma and stayed in cell designed for two people but held five. He slept on the concrete floor on a towel, and saw a guy get stabbed in the throat, and a young kid get raped in the bathroom. He got out recently and though it was terrible experience, it made him appreciate life much, much, more than he ever had before.

If they sent me up for life,
I would be trying to figure a way out everyday till I either broke out, or died!

Well, it honestly depends on how long I'd be in there, what I did to get there, family support or family needing support.........

Let me qualify my PERSONAL thoughts by saying that I just recently retired from the Florida Department of Corrections. I was a "correctional officer" for XX years and saw everything except an execution.

I have three retirement checks coming in and the wife and I live on them.

If I got over zealous with an aggressive Wal-Mart receipt checker and knocked granny to her knees and got 1-3 for agg bat....then no.

If I was a single man with no means of support when I went to prison and no one depending on me when I get out and I had a pretty long "hitch" to do........quite possibly!

I'm old, set in my ways, prideful and generally don't lilke to be messed with. I don't belong to a gang nor would I join one when I "went to college". So, here I am an old white man in a prison full of "minority offenders" and I don't like to be messed with. I get "dissed" and I retaliate. Win or loose the retaliation, I will loose again.

You really need to understand that an old man doing life in prison is a time bomb waiting to go off. If the old "convict" sticks a shank into my spine and I'm paralyzed from the shoulders down for the rest of my life..what are they going to do to him. 36 months in an 8X12 and he's back in open pop ( if he behaves in "Close Management"!(and that would hold true if he/she stuck an employee also) but I'm done for life.

HIV rate is unbelievable in DOC. HEP B & C are high also.

I know I'm running wild right now, but the question is very broad. But if I had to say yest or no, then yes I would consider it.

Amen, brother! If it was a short stay, less than a year say, and I did the crime, then I'd just go to jail and get it over with. If I didn't do the crime, or I did but it was a long stretch I'd be looking at, or I had broke some new unjust crime (owning a gun for example) that BO comes up with, they'd play hell catching me. I'm half a days drive from Mexico, and I'd not bother crossing at a bridge. My wife's from Mexico, so it wouldn't be like we'd be starting from scratch. I'd just have to do my best to fit in after joining up with the wife and kids in Michoacan at some later date.

If it was bad enough that I'd consider suicide, I'd rather just fight it out with whoever tried to catch me. The worst that could happen is that I'd die anyway.

I've never been in prison. I did (in my younger days) spend some time in jail. I didn't like it much. However unless your a cop or child molester, it isn't REALLY all that bad.

I don't know. Not exactly suicide, but I see little reason to be taken alive. One life sentence or a hundred, it's all the same to me.
