...so when an e-mail from Guns.com popped up with some used S&Ws, I had to examine it closely. Yep, turned out that they had some police turn-in 4-inch 64s and 65s. I already have 3 64s, 2- 3- and 4-inch, so I turned my attention to the 65s. Looks like they had 65-3s, -4s, -5s, -6s, and -7s. My 3" 65 is a -5, so I narrowed my search to the same in 4". Their price is $499.99, so I pulled the trigger on a "very good" condition one.

I will say this for Guns.com - they are fast. They apparently have my FFL's info on file, because they printed a label and gave me a tracking number just a couple of hours after I hit the "buy" button.

IMO $500 is a darn good price for a stainless .357 these days. Up to now, all I've seen is six-hundred-something and up, so I'm happy with the price. In my experience, stainless is the one finish where it doesn't matter all that much if a gun has a few minor blemishes, because it's easy enough to fix with some Mother's, a Scotch pad or two, and a couple hours' worth of work. I grabbed some "placeholder" photos to tide us over until the real deal shows up.

I don't always recommend Guns.com because they sometimes have ridiculously high prices, but this lot of used guns are all priced right. (By the way, the Model 64s were even cheaper at $439.99.) The checkout process was very fast and painless, and as I said, they are already into shipping it to my FFL. Tough to beat all that!

I love the police trade-in's to. Back in 2017-2018 the MS DOC turned in all their revolvers and replaced them with Glocks. They probably got over a hundred S&W's. I only buy guns with cash so over a period of six months I bought over a dozen of them as I was able to come up with the funds. Now I wish I would have just put them on a credit card. These 66's and 686's ran from $350-$450. All had rubber grips that I replaced.

I also got several 10's, a 36 and a model 38 along with half a dozen Rugers. They had 64's and 65's in the $200-$300 range. I went in one day to get a 64 and 65 and they were all gone. A local gun shop came in and bought all that were left. I went to that shop and they were all marked up several hundred dollars.

Don't ya hate shops like that? I know, of course they have the "right" to price any way they want, but to me that sort of boost in price is just as bad as price gouging.
I just counted, and this makes 16 police or corrections trade-ins in my gaggle-o'-guns, including 3 I bought from other cops.
I got many of mine in 2012-2013 when I went on limited duty for a year to have several surgeries before retiring. I had one of those "AFLAC" type policies and made a ton of money.... spent nearly all of it on guns, getting models that I'd let get away over the years. I've since used my tiny social security check to pick up a few more. Gotta "feed the habit," ya know.... :D

Yep - I also ordered a 65-5 / 357 /4" stainless. I have bought other used guns from them and have never been disappointed in quality. I'm really looking forward to getting a "real" wheel-gun (other revolvers I have are in .22 caliber).

I guess this could be called a police trade-in, been cipherin' on what I have in it..... actually traded an assortment of stuff to get it and as close as I can figure the stuff I traded was worth around 650, tho I didn't have that much in it. I figured any model 10 has decent value right now, and the Hong Kong PD connection could only help. But, yeah, any cop gun is neat, not only from a historical perspective, but also they are usually mechanically excellent, having been carried way more than ever fired..

Thanks for posting, I was wondering about their condition since all the models they have are listed as very good and I have no experience with them. Looking forward to pics of yours!

After striking out on smiths at the last few guns shows I'm thinking of picking up both a 64 and a 65. I'm a bit leery on buying revolvers sight unseen after a few bad experiences on gunbroker but your post has me extremely tempted.

Edit: yeah I just did it, ordered a 64-5 with wood grips and a 65-6. Hope they are as good as yours. Only problem I had with them is because I can't select the FFL I usually like to use because it's not on their list I have to go through someone else with a higher transfer cost.

Just tried to order, but nothing happens when I click the "Place Order" button. Tried it several times. Hope I don't get 27 Model 65-6. Credit card would probably bounce for that many anyhow.

Mike

Edit - second time was the charm. Now it works. Still hope I do not receive 27 revolvers.

Police turn in's are a great deal...the Swiss and Italian Police service sold me a 225 Sig and a 92s for 239.00 each. Sig was as new 92 needed a barrel which I got for 99.99 and it was a tack driver. Uncle Sam use to send me a Bunch of rifles back around 2000 to 2007, All he wanted was some paperwork and 395.00 and he sent me rebuilt M1's and 1903's... Only deal Ive ever got from Uncle Sam.

Got my 64-5 and 65-6 today. Both look at first glance like they are in pretty good condition, but I think I got a stinker on the 64. It appears someone buggered up the side plate screw that holds in the yoke so badly that they ground away part of the frame lug so they could remove the cylinder. It doesn't come off unless you force it but it's still disappointing. The 65-6 has a little rust on the trigger but I can clean that up pretty easily, so I'm much happier with that one. Both appear to be in time and have good lockup at least.

Guns.com has some high prices, at times, but will take offers on used firearms. In addition, if you log in an look at a new firearm, you will often get an email in a couple of days indicating a "price drop".

The one I got - in MD's seven day jail now - is in very good cosmetic shape. Timing is uniform and off a bit, but should be easy to correct. A wider cylinder stop is incoming from Numrich.

This will be the third from Guns.com and another arrived at my LGS today. Their pricing seems almost random, but when you find the right gun at the right price it's an easy process with quick delivery, as you note. They also supply a nice case for shipping.

I just bought the same model revolver from them, can't wait to check it out next week.

I bought a 65-5 from them too, condition was as listed but since they used a generic photo in their ad I did not get the one shown. The one I received has SCIG stamped on the side plate and 35 below that, I assume that is a unit and internal weapon number, does anyone have a clue?
