686 appreciation post

I'm a little late to the 686 party...spent most of my time with N-frames and K-frames! However I did pick up this 3" 686-6 "3-5-7" last year for a good price, and I really like it. Still trying to pry a 3" CS-1 away from my son's boss.

Mine is the blued version 586. All my Smith and Wesson's are blued except the 629.

My 686 no dash with the "M" mark stamped in the yoke has a different front sight then any that are pictured here unless I missed one. It is I promise, more precise than I am accurate.

That is a Silhouette gun, the adjustable front sight was for the different distances involved with metallic silhouette shooting.

Very nice!

If you can't find silver...go with blue.

I had wanted a 686 6 shot W/6 inch barrel...one of the old ones... a "no dash" if I could find one... but no luck for several years. I saw a few on GB, but I simply wasn't going to pay the exorbitant prices. I ran across a 6 inch, 6 shot 586 (no dash) that had been a competition gun for an old Marine I know, and he let it go for an AMAZING price. He had a new 586 on the table beside it and it was going for above $900... I got the old one for just a touch over half that. The trigger is smooth as butter and VERY light in SA & DA. I got a great deal on a shooter. I wish it were Stainless, but I've always loved the S&W blued guns.

I've had and carried just about all of them, but now I'm down to three, 686-0 4" from my first LEO job, 686 4" seven shot I bought at a pawn shop about 15 years ago $300 OTD (that won't happen again), and an odd ball 686 six shot, fluted cylinder (no wart but it is MIM with a flat hammer) with a 7" barrel that my very good brother gave me last year. The 7 shot rides with me a lot on my little farm while mowing or bush hogging. I really enjoy this forum.

I quite like the platform. One of my sweetest shorts is a no dash 6" 586. And that full underlug gives it a badass look.

I don't prefer L frames over K and N. I enjoy each for their respective merits.

If I could only have one revolver, it would probably be a 4" model 19/66. But if all I owned was a 686, I wouldn't be sad about it.

One of the fun things about the S&W revolver line is that the whole spectrum of preferences are available.
