OK guys without a letter I've hit a dead end so far in my research on this particular Model 686-5 with 7 shot cylinder, 3” barrel, round butt, bead blast finish, red ramp front sight and white outline adjustable rear sight, Unless I have missed it in the 4th and 5th editions of the book of standards, and other sources. The serial number shows it to be a 1999, And I believe it to be an Ashland distributor gun. but I have no proof of that so far, so feel to jump in and help me on this one....

I bought the same one about eight months ago...prefix is CDF...I have the original box, nothing particularly special about it, product code 104190. I too was hoping the 5th edition would have something about it. I'll probably have it lettered at some point...one of my favorites.

The fact that product code 1O4190 and S/N with the triple- alpha prefix CDT does not show up in any of the books of standards and leaves me curious. I don't think it's a one of the kind and obviously if you have the exact same gun it is not, But I do believe it's a distributor limited run of some kind and being a collector of factory guns it's pretty cool when I find something of this nature because Performance Center and custom guns are just fine but not my thing.

You guys obviously have Product Code revolvers (104190) that have not been reported to Jim and Rich for inclusion in the "SCSW" editions. The CDT and CDF s/n's definitely point to a manufacture date of 1999, and the PC relates to the Model 686 Plus (7-shot). 104190 may be the PC for the 3" version, since 104192 (2-1/2" bbl.), 104194 (4" bbl.), and 104198 (6" bbl.) were manufactured during the same time period. Definitely pre-Internal Lock (2001) and fluted cylinder. Might be Ashland or other limited run, but as you say, it looks like only a letter will determine your revolvers' pedigree.
