should i get the pre- lock with the pin on the hammar or, the -8 newest version

Tyler, when I was your age I bought myself a Marlin Glenfield model 60 from K-Mart for $39.95. I still have it and I still shoot it. Whatever you decide to get choose carefully and hold on to it. 40+ years from now you'll understand why I've told you this.

i really do intend on holding to my first gun until i die to pass it on to my kids if i have some. i would get the ruger but i feel like ill not have as much fun with it as i would the 586. but then ammo prices accessories all that factors into it against the 586. thanks

tyler....... first gun ........ an S&W 17 or 18....22lr......learn the basics ...... and everything else is ................just..................building on a good foundation

Welcome to the forum.
Bam-Bam makes a lot of sense.

The model 18 is a 4" K frame, the model 17 is a 6" barreled K-frame. Either one will serve you well.

A good .22 revolver to learn the basics is a good way to start.
IF you buy one of the ones he suggested, and take care of it, your Grand kids will get as much fun out of it as you will.

Tyler-
Like the others above, I would point you towards the 586, of course this is the S&W Forum :). The only thing I would warn you on is that you check on the legal issues in your state, being 16 w/a handgun in Illinois is probably a lot different than up here in Alaska.

The other point I would make, is just what do you want the handgun for? I, personally, don't really like carrying any revolver w/more than a 4" barrel anymore. That's just my opinion & is worth exactly what you paid for it; however I find when I need more than 4" of barrel, I'm better off with a rifle .

P.S-Welcome to the forum, great bunch of folks here!

I'd go with the 586, shooting 38 Specials till I got the feel for it. My 10/22 was the most fun gun I owned, till I got an M&P 15/22. The Ruger Minis I've owned, , were less than stellar performers.

But like Iggy said, Bam-Bam makes a lot of sense, my DA skills have improve significantly since I got a K-22 (Pre 17) and it goes to the range every visit, too much fun to leave it at home.

Look into Steyr. I own a L9-A1. And yes, it's fun.

Hi Tyler, I'm sure you have considered the difference in price of the ammo between .38 special/.357 magnum and .22 long rifle. The 586 is a fine piece but you have to "feed" it. The .22 would allow you to do a lot more practice to develop basic skills. Then you could move up to the larger calibers. There is always a use for a nice .22. Most of us older guys have more than one. (Some a lot more!) Best of luck in your decision.

I would suggest a Model 17, 6" learn the basics with it and when you can shoot it well, then step up to the .357/.38.
A model 17 is never a mistake...

i want kind of a do it all gun but i love revolvers and will try to stick with it, but if i have to get a semi auto pistol to meet the do it all, then so be it

then ill probably end up getting a nice .22 if that is a good foundation to start on but which one between revolvers and rifle. i see the model 17 being a contender and a 10/22

I have a Marlin 60, great starter gun, cheap 22 lr ammo when you can find it

If you have already shot bigger calibers than I would get the 586 but with a 4" Barrel. You will get bored quick with the .22LR and want something bigger quickly.Look for a nice pre lock 4" 586 and start with .38spls.I recommend the 4" as the 586 is a full underlug Gun that is naturally barrel heavy and the 6" just magnifies the issue(I have one so I speak from experience)
