...to referring to any gun, as a "grail gun". The market changes somewhat rapidly, so what I consider desirable today, may not be that way tomorrow.

Today, at the Michigan Antique Arms Collectors' Show, I found a nice example of a Model 27-2. This particular revolver was manufactured in 1980, has Goncalo Alves stocks, and "2" T's. The nickel plating and 4" barrel were particularly attractive. It came with the original owner's manual and sales literature, tool kit, and display case. The case has a couple of dings in it, but the flocking is in good condition.

The Model 27 is one of my favorite revolvers.Years ago, I finally found and bought a mint 5" 27-2 to add to my modest collection. Your 4" nickel sounds like an excellent find.

I keep saying-
The 27-2 in FOUR inch that is pinned and recessed, is positively the scarcest variant of the WHOLE 27 family, with the probable exception of the Mod 27-1.
It is positively the rarest variant of the 27-2.

Mark the prophet-
2-3 yrs down the road, the FOUR inch pinned and recessed 27-2's that are prissy- that is, in the case and toting all the junk and looking GOOD, will be bringing $1500-1650, and quickly, if/when offered.

There's no reason your beautiful Model 27 can't be a "grail' gun for any S&W enthusiast . It would be for me. It's a 4-incher, and it's nickle. And those stocks are gorgeous.

My favorite guns are my pair of Model 28-2s in 4", pretty ugly but functional.

Can you have more than one "grail" gun?

Actually, for me, a good .44 special, Model 24/624 is my grail. I'd settle for another good 29/629, but I really like tapered barrels.

It ran $700. It doesn't have a white outline rear, either.

I was set-up at the show, even had some S&W's in my case. I passed on a 90% .38/44 HD with pre-war Magna's for 1K, a pre Model 21 in the gold box for 2K and a flat out new .38 Regulation Police in the maroon box for $600. All I bought was some ammo and a pre Series-70 Colt .22 conversion unit.

Why didn't you say hello? If you're there tomorrow, I'm in the first row with billiard green table covers embroidered with MAAC logo on the front. Walk in, turn left and watch to the left.

The same guy had a blue steel Model 27-2 with a 6.5" barrel. He also had a nice Gold Cup and a MKIV by Colt. I passed on all. I did see a very nice Model 57, but the guy wanted $1k for it, and I wasn't all that hot for a Model 57. He also had a NIB pre-Series 70 Gold Cup, and a pre-Series 70 chambered in .38 Special WC. However, I wasn't prepared to pay $3k and $2.5k, respectively, for the chance to buy.

Was the Colt conversion unit the one the guy had priced at $300? I looked at that one right after I bought the 27.

I doubt that I'll be there tomorrow. I'm going to try and get in a couple of lines of trap and 5-stand at WWCCA.

I don't think it was ever on a gun. It's complete with the box, papers, magazine, bushing and I think he was wrong about it being a 70 Series kit... pretty sure it's from the 60's. It's still at the show and I haven't taken it apart yet, so please don't tell me you passed for a reason (unless there was a good reason).

Shoot well tomorrow (keep your head down)! Maybe see you at the April show.

I passed on the conversion, because my brother just shipped one to me that he never used. It's also NIB. It should be here by mid-week.

IMO, $700 is very reasonable for a 4" nickle Model 27 in the condition shown. It's really too good a gun for a clod like me, but I'm certainly glad you got it, and even happier that you chose to show us what you have!

Personally, I'd rather have one M27 like that one than any two Colt Pythons (apologies to the Python fans).
