I'm on the hunt for a perfect .22LR

Nylon can be hard on a gun's finish. But if the gun was stainless...

The gun shown has been in and out of a Nylon holster many, many times and I've never seen any signs of wear. Now I've also seen blued guns used in leather - unlined - holsters that showed signs of wear after only a few holsterings! Stainless is still going to show signs of wear if used with a holster.

The perfect 22 Find a nice Colt DiamondBack 6in Barrel revolver & a Browning Buck mark 22 LR Auto and you will bw set!

Todd,
You've pretty much heard the gamut of .22 suggestions especially the small J frame models. I too am a fan of the 4" early 50's Pre-Model 18 and Model 18. They are fairly numerous and easy to find. Since I prefer the classic look of blue revolvers, there are other blue options once the M18 was discontinued. The Mod 17 was produced with 4" barrels periodically: the 17-4 was a heavy barrel with no lug and the 17-6 was a heavy barrel with full lug; both in 4". One other is a Mod 53 in 4" with a .22 optional cylinder but hard to find and big bucks if you do. One last choice for a special 4" with standard style lug (never offered by S&W in a .22 other than the 53), is a 4" Model 53 barrel mounted on an 18 or 17. It says .22 Magum on the side and not easy to find but it's my ideal K frame .22 albeit may suffer some accuracy with the slightly bigger bore. But I'll let you know when I finish mine.

Just for reference, while the Model 53 barrels are marked ".22 Magnum" they use the same bullet diameter as the standard .22RF so these tend to be very accurate when using the extra cylinder - which is slightly longer than the Model 17s & 18s. But, as there were only a few of these made they do bring a 'premium' and the "muzzle blast" on the .22 Remington "Jet" Magnum is extreme and so is the "volume of noise" that this cartridge produces. Whenever I have shot the Model 53, I have used both ear plugs and ear muffs!!!

Get a Mdl 17 or Mdl 18 and you'll be happy for the rest of your life. I own and shoot both. While I have made some of my most impressive shots with the Mdl 17, I tend to favor the 18 4" for its accuracy and similarity to my Mdl 19 4" which I love to use also.

I've got several .22s but the ones that stand out in my mind are my S&W 17, my Ruger KMK512 and my 3rd Series Colt Match Target.
I would hate to sell any of the three but I would never sell my 17.

+1 on the Model 18....

If that fails, and you're willing to pay, look at a Diamondback.

KKG,
Very glad to hear that. Maybe that's why they never offered 22WMR cylinders for the 53.

My 6" model 17 gets the nod for the most insanely accurate .22 I have ever shot. It is a true pleasure.

That's the reason. There is a M-53 4 inch barrel in the Classifieds right now but it will ONLY fit another M-53 and it looks like a take-off. So, there's no telling if it will fit your gun or not. Of course, I'd never have one of these in a 4 inch barrel because the muzzle blast and noise is bad enough in the 8-3/8" guns.

...but it's too long for easy carry. I'd just as well carry a 7" Model 41.
The 4" is perfection. Easy to carry & feels exactly the same as my 4" 66.

The Holy Grail(s)!!
Very nice.

Thanks, Mike. My heart skips every time I see one. I've been pretty lucky the last few years.
