This is a report of a very limited experience with my M&P Shield using IMI 115gr HP "Ex-Star" ammunition.

I'm only reporting from my what I experienced today and a limited knowledge of this ammo. I had doubts the IMI would perform in the Shield because it was designed for the UZI and was sold with the note that it has a very hard primer and does not work well with sub-compact 9mm.

I ran about 80 rounds through the Shield today with one FTE. That was within the first 30 rounds on a new handgun.. It may have been improper hand placement, or other user error.. but after that.. it was flawless.

Widner's Reloading and Shooting Supply is closing out on their Ex-Star at $219/1000. I was concerned it would not be reliable in my Shield but it worked fine. This says a lot about the energy the Shield puts behind their firing pin!

There is very little information about the Ex-star I can find. I did see a Youtube that did gelatin tests and it did NOT expand. This may be poor defensive ammo for this reason.

But on the positive side, it is accurate, cleaning burning, boxer primed without the crimp, and from what the tester on Youtube said it chronographs at +p speeds. It is made to Military Specs. I'm seriously considering getting another case as practice ammo... and in a pinch... maybe self-defense.

If anyone else has experience or information on this round please share!

Thank you all...

I remember this ammo from the 80's. IMI makes a good product, but it's a little hot for the Shield on a regular basis. If you run a lot of it, plan on replacing the gun sooner than you would if you had used non +P ammo.

Yes, it is a higher FPS than non +P, ( according to someone on Youtube who chrono'd his test - average through 3.93 in barrel was 1177fps) but I shot 124gr standard Federal FMJ and that funky MEM German 91gr... and there was not a marked difference in felt recoil. Next time I'll take some other +P, pay more attention to felt recoil, and compare...
