The article itself says why:

The lowest sight setting, however, on these sights is 300 meters so the sight needs to be modified to preserve the markings on the sight (despite the fact that no one ever sets a range on these in the real world other than a USMC range).

I don't know anyone that ever touches the elevation knob after zeroing. Most soldiers don't even know what it does. Set your elevation knob to 8/3 or 6/3, zero at 50 meters and you are good out to 200 meters. For a 300 meter target, hold around the head of an E-type silhouette and you will hit in the body. Past that range, you are starting to exceed the effective range of the 5.56 cartridge, especially from a 16" carbine.

Why mess with the knob?
