Impulsive buy justification help

OK, I'm hoping big time that I didn't do something realy dumb this afternoon. Model 64 (no dash) with original sq butt rounded bottom (PC?) stocks. The wood has a couple of light dings and the back of the grip frame is a little scuffed up. There is a light scratch here and there on the frame. I'm making it sound worse than it looks. Flat out, this thing looks darn good. It has the tapered barrel instead of the heavy barrel that I usually see them with. It also has the pinned in place barrel. The action locks up pretty tight (not Python tight mind you, but still as good as it should be) and the trigger pull is pretty smooth. The asking was $479 and I "suckered" into $450 plus tax and $5 call in fee. Do I need to slap myself or is this a good deal??? I fully admit that I saw it and just fell in lust for it. I shoot plenty of .38's in my magnums but have been wanting a good .38 for my own reasons. This one just called to me. So bad news or good news, please fill me in... If I screwed up big time, tell me, I can take it. This wouldn't be the first time I have screwed up.

Oh, and of course pics when I pick it up, still have to cool down... I'm always so hot on gun buying day... Thursday hurry up already!!!!

When one talks to me and I lust for it there's only one main reason I won't get it...$$$. If I have the $ to spend it's coming home with me.
Maybe you paid a little more than someone (or a little less) but you got one you want and in a little while the money will be forgotten.

It's commonly called "buyers remorse" but I've never known it to relate to S&W handguns...

The only remorse anyone should ever feel here is sellers or traders remorse and most of us have felt that pain many times long after the deed was done...

You saw it, you liked it, you bought it.... I promise you if you still have it just a few years down the road you'll be glad you did. They don't make them like that anymore and they likely never will again.... Ya done good!!

I bought a 64 on impulse at a very good on-line auction price which I believe was $267. It was in A+, lightly used shape. Like a doorknob I sold it a year later. Wish I had that one back.

I have more regrets about impulse selling than I do about impulse buying.

Remorse is the wrong word for this. I’m not sure what the right one is though. Prices on guns period are just in complete chaos right now. I just can’t believe I see KelTec’s going for over three hundred bucks. I’m not knocking them, it’s just the fact that they were made to be affordable. I saw a few Jennings, Lorcin, and some other brand that looks like a clone of the previous two. They wanted close to three hundred for them. People, this is getting to be common pricing that I see everywhere around me. There is no classic older better version of the Bryco or Hi Point. But even the used versions of these are going for bigger money that I think should be possible. I happen to be an out of the closet fan of Taurus and I see used Taurus prices going for money that not even I can understand. So when I see a S&W anything for sub five hundred dollar pricing and it’s a model that I like… It makes my skin crawl a little. I had the fear that maybe they punched these out not knowing the grade of stainless was subpar or something. So maybe it isn’t turning out to be the deal of the century like some guys are finding and posting about on here but I’m thinking that Thursday afternoon I’m going to be one happy camper. Thanks to all who have replied.

I bought my Model 28 and paid $600 for it only to find here that I gave more than I should have for a 28 missing the original stocks, no box, no tools, no nothing, just gun. It would just be nice to make sure I don't just keep giving away money that I don't have so much of. I'm just bad about getting beer goggles for some guns. No one needs to wake up with a coyote ugly the next morning. (the same goes to the ladies, not just us guys, no girl wants to wake up next to what she thought was handsome from last night...)

As long as you know you will lose, all is well. I have to figure out how to hide the Model 40 I just scored on Gunbroker yesterday. I hope it looks enough like a 49, or a 58, or a 19, where she won't know the difference....I don't THINK I can tell her it is a Glock that I have had for the last 20 years....

You did just fine, I had been looking for a 64 no dash for a very long time until I found one I thought was fairly priced. I had been seeing them around but I felt the asking prices of $6-800 I was seeing on them was way out of line. For $450 ya done good, the no dash tapered barrels seem to command a large premium over the more common bull barrel versions.

Edit: there are 3 64 no dashes on GB right now, a really rough beater for $350 with a lot of deep gouges and pitting that no amount of polishing will ever fix, a nice looking shooter for $650 and an ANIB for $800. You still did good.

I tend to impulse buy on occasion.just have sloppy joes for dinner instead of your fav resturant once or twice (if you really mess up) and call it even,makes me feel better..plus guns last longer

My question is who told you you "gave more than I should have"? Who died and made them the Keeper of All Pricing Knowledge? My experience is that LOTS of gun pricing is a regional issue and seasonal to boot. Some models seem to be plentiful in this state or that, others not so, and for some odd reason .44 mags tend to go slightly up at the end of September.

Saying, hey Brother, you like that 64 and they weren't asking what YOU"d consider an arm and a leg, then I'd say you did good regardless. It's a real nice gun, no other explanation needed.

In short...there's LOTS of folks who'll that tout this price or that. And a "deal dream come true" does happen from time to time. But...a no longer made Smith, nice finish, in a caliber you want and sub $500? Like the previous poster said, the days of holding out for one just $50 cheaper are gone. Or if not gone, then you'll wait LOTS longer to shoot the one you wanted as there are LOTS more folks looking for these things via the internet.

Naa, 450 isn't out of line. I spent roughly half that (plus a skate key & broken fishing pole) for the heavy bbl version.. a well used police trade in few years back. I bet you like yours twice as much as I like mine. Condition has alot to do with price.

I think in the cold war days they called it MAD.
As I have said before, if you buy to sell, then you have to be very strict on price. If you by and keep like I do, price isn't as big an issue, provided it isn't 2X more than it should be. I don't get too bound up over $50 or even MAYBE $100 if the condition is right and I WANT it.

As others have said, they don't make em anymore, and the pain of the money fades fast, unless you are living hand to mouth. In that case, you shouldn't be collecting much of anything right now, let alone guns.
I picked up my K-38 masterpiece yesterday from a GB auction, and have a Colt 1909 Army on the way. My gun fund is very low for a few months now.... but I don't regret it one bit.

FWIW, I did much the same thing last week.

Didn't take bread off the table, but it wasn't excess cash either.

You find something you've been looking for at a good price and if it's hard to find under normal circumstances, you have to take a gut check and give it a go/no-go.
