I went for lunch to a IN-IN-OUT burger place yesterday and my brother-in-law ordered an Animal Berger.

I had no idea what he meant.

I thought IN-N-OUT only had a very simple menu with single and double burgers -- with an without cheese and fries.

Turns out thy have a secret, non-advertised menu with several more choices:

In-N-Out Secret Menu | #HackTheMenu

If people from the East don't know about IN-N-OUT you are missing something. But it will get there eventually.

I'd go there over most any other fast food place.

The chain started back in the LA area in the late 60's. There was a place next to where I went to college in Claremont, and we used to go there sometimes when the cafeteria food was too bad.

Then I never saw them again for about 25 years until they finally reached the SF Bay Area where I worked. Now they are all over Nor Cal and a few nearby states.

The only one that I ever ate in was in Prescott, AZ.
That's where I met the Prescott ex-mayor who knew Jeff Cooper.

I love In-n-Out, I always get the 3X3. (3 patties, 3 cheese)

But I still like 5 Guys better.

Funny story, though. We were in Vegas, we were on our way to the airport to fly home, and my wife says, "I'm hungry, let's go to In-n-Out!" I said no way, it's noon, and the line is always out the door! She said let's go anyway, she'd think of something. We get there, and the line is out the door. She told me to wait with the car, she was going in. Well, she came out a few minutes later with two double-doubles. I said how did you do that? She said she went up to the people at the front of the line, and said, "I'll give you five bucks if you pretend you know me", and they said they didn't want her money, but please, go ahead!

That's one of my favorite Vegas stories!

Not a picky food guy,it's food it makes a bowel movement :D

That said I was traveling and got to try in-and-out and while it's good it wasn't worth the long damn lines and monkeys in a zoo atmosphere.

Less crowds and it'd be akin to whataburger and other joints that are a bit higher then McDonalds (hell Burgerking is higher)

Isn't In-n-out and Hardies owned by the same? I think (There I go again thinking) I read once they were owned by the same.?????????????

I've tried them a few times and my opinion is "Much ado about nothing"!
There burgers are Ok but nothing spectacular! I can and do make far better burgers at home.

There are no In -n- Out burger joints here in NY , that I'm aware of. We have had 5 guys here for a few years now though. I'm kind of partial to Red Robin myself, With there Giant two handed gourmet burgers and bottomless basket of steak fries! Mmmmm
The original is still the best though. It's a huge hand patted burger with all the fixins and a fried egg. Yeah baby! :D

One In-N-Out is here now in San Antonio, and a second is under construction. I haven't been there yet, but from what I have heard, the prices are fairly high. For a fast food burger, it will be difficult to beat a Whataburger (single, double, or triple), which is about everywhere in Texas (and several adjoining states).

"and bottomless basket of steak fries! Mmmmm" Red Robin's burgers are OK, but neither me nor my wife likes their fries. So we don't go there very often. I'll eat them but my wife refuses to. Sort of under-fried soft, and slices are too thick and large.

Hardies and Carl's Jr. are owned by the same parent company (CKE - Carl Karcher Enterprises). In-N-Out is still privately owned (Lnysi Snider), and all locations are company owned, not franchises.

Being a Southern California native, I prefer In-N-Out to just about all other fast food burger chains. I knew of "secret menu items" long before the internet. "monkey style" is still one of my favorites not on most of the secret menus.

5 Guys is good too. I think quality is about the same, but it has a different taste. Some days I choose 5 guys over In-N-Out. A little less convenient, as I don't know of any 5 Guys with a drive through.

See, now I'm just the opposite. I like a good hearty potato french fry, not those over fried shoe strings most burger joints call french fries.

I don't understand the hype about In-N-Out. I have been to a couple in AZ, at the insistence of my 30-something DIL and I have been to them in TX since they opened here. I don't believe the burgers are any better than many other burger joints. As far as the fries, yeah they are fresh cut and I like that. But I can get fresh cut fries other places. Me, I prefer Five Guys Burgers and fresh cut fries. 'Splain it to me - I don't get it.

I haven't tried In and Out yet, although some of the liberal media people here were thrilled when they arrived. Gave them a lot of free (?) coverage.

My adult kids both said they're nothing special.

In Dallas, the Burger Street chain is good and I eat there, but Snuffer's is the best burger place. I think they have two locations, and it's privately owned, mainly a sit-down restaurant.

The fries are greasy, but they always are unless the place serves dried out ones. My daughter always preferred their chicken sandwiches over a burger, and they're healthier.

They used to have some snazzy waitresses who were flight attendants laid off work, but that's been awhile. Quite scenic, and you get the SMU student crowd in one location near the campus.

A burger costs about twice what they do some places, but I think they're easily the best I've had.

Oh: I just saw a Steak n' Shake ad at the top of the page. I've eaten at one, but always breakfast. If their burgers are as good as their eggs and ham, they're pretty good.

I've read on the internet......

I've read that Taco Bell has a secret menu with discontinued items that I used to like. Enchiritos for instance. They say you have to ask, but I have no idea if this is true, or true for SOME stores or a big hoax.

They never had 'Spicy Italian' on the Subway menu but I knew they made one. Salami, Pepperoni, Bologna with (I like) provolone cheese, lettuce, salt/pepper, oregano and oil and vinegar. One time I ordered one and the person next to me said, "That sounds GOOD!" I said, "They are good and I don't understand why they don't have them with all of the other sandwiches."

They are open late, you can go in at midnight and get the whole menu delivered to your table.

We actually had an In and Out Burger in SE MA some years ago. I was thrilled as it was the only one I had seen east of the Mississippi. Even though it was better than any chain burger within 20 miles, it only lasted a couple of years before becoming an (and also doomed) drive through coffee shop. New Englanders are a hard sell on anything new. We are forever doomed to McDonalds and Dunkin' Donuts :-(
