Folks, One of my Grandsons will graduate from the Univ of WY this spring with a degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Management. He will work for the WY Fish and Wildlife dept. I am looking for an appropriate grad gift. I know he will be issued a department owned handgun; however, I would like to give him his own just because. Problem, I have no idea what handgun WY issues their wardens. Can anyone enlighten me. If so thank you a bunch.

I gifted his father an S&W M&P .45ACP when he retired as a Colorado warden and gave my oldest Grandson a S&W 686 CS-1 when he graduated last spring.

I second the "great Grandad". I would find out where he shooting interests lie and let that be your guide. Handgun / shotgun / rifle? Revolver or semi automatic? I do like the suggestion of a working size Randall knife he could make use of on duty. Maybe a backup revolver and the knife ?

I second the idea of checking with the agency he will be joining. Some agencies are very restrictive and require the officer to carry the provided firearms only. Some will allow a privately owned secondary/backup firearm. If firearms are covered by the agency, there may be some other piece of "kit" that would be very beneficial, ie. vehicle organizer, a GOOD quality flashlight.

Since handguns are provided, maybe look into a rifle. My father was a wildlife biologist for the State of Oregon for 35 years. He kept a Model 94 in 30/30 behind the seat of his work rig. Came in handy on many occasions. But definitely check with the agency to see what the officers are authorized to carry.
Congrats to your grandson. No matter what you get him for a gift, let him know you are proud of him.

That Randall knife is a good idea; perhaps have it engraved with his graduation date or something personal from Grandpa. Or maybe a nice watch, engraved from you to him. Congratulations to all concerned.

Is there a firearm in your collection that he might cherish as an heirloom from his grandfather? Maybe something with some memories behind it?

Last time I checked (a couple of years ago) they were carrying a standard Glock 22 in 40 S&W. Before that it was a 9mm Beretta. Years ago they all had an M14 rifle behind the seat of the truck but the Dept. of Defense recalled them all for GWOT. I think tney're issued some sort of AR-15 now.

I'm assuming he is being hired as a warden/enforcement officer. If so, the tool he will use the most and rely on will be his flashlights. Here in Vermont the next most used tool is a 22 rimfire rifle. The 22 is probably issued as hopefully all his firearms are. We were issued Mag-Lites but I only kept them as back-ups, I always had my personal Streamlights. Maybe an engraved flashlight or two. If you pick the right one or ones, he not only will kept it but will rely on something you gave him. I doubt an agency would prohibit the use of a personal light. Picking the right light or lights would be the problem.
