Inexpensive quality tactical knives

I was curious what everyone's opinion is on the best brand for tactical knives under $100.

Benchmade is kinda out of that price range, I was curious about Ka-Bar vs Gerber vs Buck.

Are the gun label knives any good? S &W and Remington have some cool looking knives.

S&W and Remington tend to be Chinese knives.

I don't own a Ka-Bar but I do own Gerbers and Bucks but I would also draw your attention to Kershaw. Also keep in mind that you can get Benchmade knives in the $100 price point if you like them. That's what my 580 Barrage cost. As for a comparison amongst those brands, my favorite is the Benchmade followed closely by Kershaw. I own more Kershaw knives due mainly to price but they are great knives. Gerber and Buck are good but the Kershaws and Benchmade feel better in my hand, you may be different. When it comes to knives, I've got to hold and work them. Feel the weight and the action of the blade. There's at least one more recent Tactical knife thread you can go through and read as well. It was maybe a week ago, if that.

Take a look at the Ka-Bar Dozier line. The prices are very good. They are made in Taiwan, but the couple of knives I've had from there (one being a Gerber) have been pretty good.

I've been looking for a similar knife. The responses on the other thread are illuminating and show an absolutely HUGE field of choices in this market.

I've nearly become befuddled by the variation and offerings. The virtual world demands I now find a decent live store to handle some of the products.

If you want a sheath knife, the excellent SOG 2000 SEAL knife sells at BASS Pro Shops for about $100, or did the last time I checked.

It passed tough Navy trials, as have certain Fallkniven models. www.fallkniven.com Look at the S-1 and the A-1.

Those three should serve you very well. But the Fallkniven will be over $100 from most dealers.

Finally, Ontario has a series of combat knives with synthetic handles that seem like good value for money. I think they sell for maybe $50, but haven't checked in a long time.

How "tactical" do you need to get? The Buck Special, No. 119, costs about $40-50 at some retailers. But it isn't a black knife with saw teeth.

The S&W knives are made in China and are screaming buys these days with some under $10. Decent quality for the money too. Remington closed their cutlery factory in 1940 and I have no clue where they're being made today.

I'd suggest caution when buying by brand name as even the big ones like you mention have had knives made for them by others or in China. Also, knife brands are bought and sold frequently. The steel in knives under $100 will all be pretty much the same so I'd go to a big box store and handle several. Pick the one you like best and you're good to go.

I wanted to spend less than $60, and ended up with a Benchmade Vex. I've had it for months now, carry it everywhere, and have been very happy with it.

If you shop at walmart they carry Spyderco, Gerber, Buck, and Kershaw, and I think some CRKT. The super walmarts have some of these available in the store but you can also order online and ship-to-store to pick on your next trip to walmart.

If it were me I would order the Spyderco Delica 4" VG10 steel, plain edge for $54, then use the ~ $40 balance to buy some boxes of 9mm while I was there.

I purchased my Spyderco Native (made in Colorado) there years ago and wish I had bought a few more as wm does not carry them anymore.

You can look through their list here, which also has some reviews. If you find a couple that you like, Amazon can be a good place to look up more reviews on many of these knives.

I'm also a fan of Spyderco's Byrd cara cara ($23 at wm).

I completely forgot about SOG and Kershaw! I'll have to add those to my search.

Someone asked if I wanted a folder or a fixed, I'm looking for a matte finish boot knife.

I would say to look at Benchmade and Spyderco in that $100 price range. The Spyderco's are really weird looking to me, but mine have good steel (VG-10), are easy to keep sharp, and the weird looking thumbhole works well, so I have learned to like the looks. I like the blade design on several of them, but stay away from the crazy hook-looking things. They look "tactical," whatever that is, but in daily use, they are useless. My $.02.

SOG and Gerber have knives in that range, as does Puma and Boker. I prefer the last two brands over the first two.

As I said in the other thread, I don't care for Kershaw or Buck, never have, personal preference only.

CRKT has great designs, but I haven't been happy with there steel and blade grind. Seems a little too hard to sharpen and keep sharp.

I do recommend liner-locking knives for folders.

How does this grab you? Fallkniven Garm, all black. Sheath can be hung from neck. But I didn't check the US price.

This design will be illegal in many places. Be careful about carrying boot knives unless you're a LEO.

Well thats a good question. The one I looked at had a spring assisted flipper unlike the CRKT that also has the flipper but it is not spring assisted.

I didn't know Ken Onion designed all of them. I learn something new all the time.

+1 on Kershaw. I like the Shallot and Leek designs. My Shallot is my EDC. We also have a couple of Spydercos that we like.

I will second Highlanders complaint on CRKT's steel.
