Where this month?
I've read that 615 were produced, then I also read this was not correct and 2000 were produced. Does anybody know the true number.

The 4th ed. of the S&W Catalog refers one to the Model 50 for information on what I believe you have. It's called the Chiefs Special Target, 2 or 3 inch barrel with micrometer click rear sights. These are marked as M-36 or M-36-1 or have no designation at all and approximately 2136 were produced. I'm sure there's someone out there more knowledgeable than I who will provide more information, possibly more accurate. ion, I jumped in too quickly, the 36-6 is, indeed, a target version produced in 1989 as a special production with a 3" full lug, with ribbed barrel, ramp on ramp base and a wide smooth trigger. However, it doesn't provide any number produced.

There are not 2000 Model 36 Chief's Special Target revolvers that were manufactured during the -6 engineering revision.

There may have been 2000 total Model 36s made during the -6 engineering revision.

The trouble comes in when novice shooters think that the engineering revision is part of the model number and that it denotes a specific configuration. That is not what the engineering revision is intended for

The way that a specific configuration is identified (1982+) is the 6 digit product code.

For product code 101549 (pictured above) the quantity listed on the S&W historical letters is 615

Thanks... I have a picture of the gun and box but not the label with product code. I believe it's the 101549. Still waiting for his asking price.

This is the one you are talking about. I contacted Roy directly, and he confirmed that 2000 is the correct production.

Well this has been informative. :confused:Guess I need to make my own call.

Maybe we need to submit a correction to the SCSW 4th Edition.
On page 244 it says: "Model 36-6 Target Variation: Approximately 615 were manufactured with a 3-Inch Full lug barrel with adjustable sights with a blue glass bead finish. Product code 101549. Serial number BEA5648 was our example. 1989"

That book is not the "gospel". Other mistakes in it too.

I've come to believe 2,000 is the right number.

Neat little Chiefs!

Here's an excerpt from one of Roy's letters and my 36-6.

This makes me want to cry! I had a new in the box unfired go under water, salt water!
I was going to try to find another barrel and make it a shooter but with that small number I doubt that a barrel is available.
I will have to look into sleeving the original or make a custom full lug barrel.
Smith could have one but the price would be more than the gun would be worth!

I took out my 36-6 and looked down the bore and I was pleasantly surprised there is no damage to the bore!
The exterior ain't pretty and the cylinder suffered some loss of metal so I ordered a parts kit to replace the cylinder and save me some time and work cleaning the small parts.
She won't be the prettiest girl in the world but she will go bang and should hit where I point it if I do my part!

I have an Ashland Model 60 also. I am going to have to dig out and see how much it is going to take to clean it up!

My Chiefs Special Target. I looked for this for a long time. Paid $915.

I purchased one off of Gun broker a few years back. No box or paper work. Gun is very good condition except rear sight looks like it was dropped on it. I paid 450.00 for it.
