I am curious about what anyone might know about a 629 my wife's great uncle has for sale. It's a 3(?) inch barrel with unfluted cylinder and Pachmyr grips he says came on the gun. The price is in the ok range, but I can't find any listing for this gun in my available references. Is it possible it's a more limited item? It's not the "backpacker" because it has flutes, right?

Hi, The SCSW says in 1985 5000 629's were made with Round Butt 3" barrel and unfluted cylinder, smooth finger groove wood grips. The product number is 103610 if he has the box check it out....

What dash number is it? I have a 3" -6 with un-fluted cylinder. The box says Backpacker.

I bet its the 629-2. Here is a picture of one:

And this is a 629-4 "Backpacker" (the wood combat grips on this example did NOT com e stock on them, it came with tupperwares):

The price for a 629-2 3" of anything less than $700 is in my humble opinion, fair.

I forgot to mention that the 629-2 3" that I pictured above is product code 103650 with 3200 manufactued in Sept 1989 (this from the 2nd edition of SC of S&Ws). The 629-4 3" Backpacker pictured above is product code 130450.

It was always my impression that was a typo, because I don't see these guns on the market. I thought that was the PC for the Lew Horton run, and those are fluted from that year and the next.

There are not many errors in the SCSW, but there are occasional ones. As the quote you pulled up indicated, that entry was "reported" by someone, not verified by records. Much of the "Variations" entries are this way and as such incomplete and with occasional, but well intentioned, errors.

I agree, all the 629-1 3" I have seen or heard of came with a fluted cyl. I would bet that that is a typo in the SC of S&Ws. I myself am really "in tune" about the variations of 3" N frames, as that is my area of interest. Also, it does seem that the 629-1, with a reported 5,000 made, is much harder to locate than a 629-2, with a reported 3,200 made. I dunno, maybe its just me!

Sure looks like the -2, to me. I'll have to take a good look at it again and get some pics, too. I don't see this gentleman that often, but am looking forward to the next time even more, now.

Ken, I also have thought this. I am not as "up" on the 3" .44 Magnums as you, but I DO pay attention to to everyone I see questioned about, listed for sale, in a catalog, etc.

I see the 629-1 vs. 629-2 in a ratio of like 6:1 or more. I just can't imagine them being made in a 5:3 ratio.

The backpackers I've had were fluted with rubber grips. The new unfluted model with LL is called the trail boss.

Mine were great shooting little guns for trail or rural highway duty. I'd pick it up if it's in good condition. But, thats why they call me shooter429. I love magnum snubs

Here are three examples of 3" M629's, it's probably the last one - the M629 Classic with 3" barrel.

The model number is 629-2E. Then there is an H below that. Serial # is BEE4XXX.

Can anyone tell me more about it?

My 629-2 3" is serial #BEE316x, real close to your serial #. However, mine does not have the "E" after 629-2. "E" was for the endurance package. If you look at the cylinder, the bolt notches are a bit longer than an earlier gun. Mine is not marked "E" but has the longer bolt notches...so go figure! The endurance package was in response to the cylinder rotating backwards upon firing of heavy loads. There is something else that the E package comprises, but I forget at the moment.

Just picked up a 629-4 last week $875.00 delivered, like new no box came with factory s&w hogues and Ace combat grips. I installed the Byron boot grips for CC. Called S&W today with my ser# I was told it was item #130450 only 158 made and left the factory 4-12-94 to distributor. No answer to why only 158 made. Also the seller told me that Ace grips was a company formed by S&W employees. Any info on Ace Grips?
