I believe I have a 1967ish 36-1 that I bought for $150 at an auction.
The Number on the Butt of the gun is 419645 (No prefix). Is this age estimate close? The barrel is pinned, I think.

Also, should I bring it in to a gun smith to check out the internals? This gun has moderate wear for it's age, but I have no idea what the inside looks like. Would a once over by a professional be in order?

What I believe you have sir is a very nice Model 36 (no dash) with 3" tapered barrel from late 1965 or early 1966. The barrel and front sight profiles are very different from that on the Model 36-1.

The Model 36-1 was introduced in September 1966 with a 3" Heavy barrel . . . and both the 36 and 36-1 were made from 1966 until 1984.

$150 for THAT? You better run and hide. Johnny Law is gonna' be knocking down your door for STEALIN' that gun. :D

It'd be a bargain at twice that price. NICE SCORE.

Please send me a PM to tell me where I can find auction deals like that! ;)

Yes, a good cleaning and lubrication by a professional would be in order . . . and likely make it reliable for another 50 years.

Dead on Russ. Called S&W and they confirmed the manufacturer date as 1966!
