The Ruger LC9, LCP, S&W Bodyguard .380, Sig P238 & P239, and several other popular subcompact semi-autos share a number of traits that make holsters a challenge. Basically, the small overall size and short length mean that any holster that contains enough of the pistol for reasonable retention qualities leave the user with some limitations on accessibility. The grip-frame of the pistol ends up very close to the belt and trouser waistline. Many holster designs that work extremely well with larger handguns will not permit a secure grip during the draw, much less a proper "shooting grip", so the pistol will have to be shifted in the hand after drawing before a target can be engaged.

This trait is most prevalent with any of the pancake holster designs, and with most of the IWB-style holsters. Basically, any holster with leather extending beyond or behind the trigger guard will suffer from greatly reduced accessibility.

Several years ago, as these subcompacts started gaining popularity I started receiving holster requests. Because the basic purpose of these small pistols is discreet concealed carry the people wanting holsters for them concentrated on those designs most generally useful for that purpose. The feedback that I received from customers included many comments about the general inability to properly grip and draw the pistols from such holsters.

For these reasons I have limited holster production for the very small semi-autos, and when customers inquire for holsters I usually recommend that they concentrate on pocket or purse carry with this type of sidearm. From my perspective it does me little good to produce and sell holsters that cannot perform as the customers expect and require.

Best regards.
