I just inherited a S&W .357 model 66-1 Stainless sr# 04826. 2 1/2" barrel. It is in pristine condition. I need the year of manufacture, and ball-park value. This gun has had less than 100 rounds fired, no scratches, or issues, any info will be very much appreciated, thanks, Dcoy

Pic will help with value. Serial number is on the narrow flat butt of the gun, sometimes covered by the grips. I suspect that the number above is a more or less meaningless assembly number found elsewhere.

Welcome to the Forum. Concur with Model520Fan - we need some photos to give you at least a ballpark figure of its value. Also, do you have the original factory box, documents, and tools? The Model 66 with the 2.5 inch barrel is a highly desirable piece.

The number you posted is not the serial number - number on bottom of grip is what we need.

Nice revolver you were left. Your benefactor had excellent taste. You won't have any problem selling it if you choose. Possibly separation anxiety later however. If you haven't already, you should shoot it at the range before you decide.

The sr# I posted was found under grip, and in "Hing" base seen when cylinder is open. This is the serial number and the is no 'k'in number the only other numbers on gun is MOD 66-1. I was an armorer in the Army so I do have some experience with civilian manufacturing. Since the serial number 04826 is the same on frame and cylinder I would have to say that is the true, original sr#. NO K, but I appreciate all the replies, and would love to know if anyone can give me a year of manufacture?? It is a Stainless steel mod 66-1, with beautiful wood hand grips. According to the S&W Standard Catalog the Model 66 was introduced at serial number K949100 in 1970. As other posters noted, the number you list (04826) is likely an assembly number. The actual serial number will be on the bottom of the butt and will have a K in it. The 66-1 came out in 1977 and the 66-2 in 1982 so yours should be somewhere between 1977 and 1982. Pictures will help. Good luck.

Hmmm--- Ser.# gone from the butt? "Sheep dipped", or...? Wouldn't even want to think about the worst possibility. Definitely need pics.

Welcome to the FORUM! From what you describe it sounds like a very nice gun. I bought a 66-2 Sat. that appears not to have been fired much. Would be worth more with the right grips/stocks on it. I gave $725 for it. Not a collector gun, but a nice shooter. As others have mentioned, pictures would be a great help to analyze yours. Bob

That five digit number is on the yoke and on the frame in the yoke cut. As others have stated it isn't a serial number at all. It is a parts tracking number, used during the assembly process.
Not until you actually supply the serial number. Only that will allow us to approximate when your Model 66 left the factory.
Collectively, the people who are replying to you here have hundreds of years of collecting experience. You need to learn to trust what we are telling you, instead of getting angry with the fact that we are pointing out a mistake on your part.
my 66-1 with serial #92K5731 shipped in August 1981, if that's any help.
Where do you see any "implied foul language" in his post, are you referring to where he left off the E at the end of hinge?
I think when the OP wrote, "the (sic) is no "k"in number..." JP@AK might have mistook the OP's meaning due to the OP's typing error. I believe the sentence should have read, "there is no "K" in the number..."
Hopefully, we'll get to hear more from Dcoy about his inherited Model 66 and maybe ascertain a serial number and see some photos.
