All,
I recently inherited a few S&W firearms from my mother's husband who was a retired Michigan State PD undercover vice detective.

The pics below are of his 39-2 and 5906 that I believe were his issued duty weapons. Can anyone confirm that based on the serial numbers?

The 39-2 came with his belt holster (also S&W brand btw), and the mags for the 5906 are etched with his initials and badge number, and "SHTC" - any idea what that means?

39-2 - s/n A235113
5906 - s/n THF7205

Anyway, I was never much of a fan of the S&W semi-autos but after studying these I have to say, that 39-2 has about the nicest trigger reset of anything I've owned. My custom 1911's and Sigs have nothing on that trigger :)

Anyway, can someone help date these based on the serial number?

Thanks,
Dean

39-2 - s/n A235113
5906 - s/n THF7205

1974 and 1992ish

The 5906 has the configuration that a lot of collectors desire - the Novak rear sights, rounded trigger guard, and stainless trigger/hammer. If you have the box for it the date of shipment will be given as a 4 digit code on the label, like 2345. That would mean shipped in 92, on the 345th day (Julian date).

Great guns! Welcome to the Forum!

Welcome to S-W Forum!

You were blessed to inherit those two.

Both are two of the all time classics. And looks like he kept them in great shape!

The Model 39 in any configuration is a sought after semi-automatic handgun. The Model 5906 was commonly carried by law enforcement, and very reliable but somewhat common. Do you know if that was his duty pistol? Nice things to receive. Welcome!

Cool story. I would never let that 39 go. Looks to be in really good shape considering it's age and use.

I believe both were issued to him, along with a model 38 airweight I spoke about in a different thread. I can prove the 38 was MSP but I don't have any paperwork on the 39-2 or 5906.
