Don't do this.
I own a M&P 357 Sig full size. In trying to be clever and save money I resorted to the old standby of cutting up a bicycle inner tube and slipping it onto my M&P grip. It was comfortable and tacky, but my previously reliable M&P started sending the top few rounds from a full mag. into the bottom of the feed ramp. I am using the medium size grip insert. When I cut the sleeve off, functioning returned to normal. I was able to verify the cause with hand cycling and live fire.
Why did this happen? My best guess is that the very tight sleeve was flexing the bottom of the front of the grip back and tilting the mag. forward so the top round in the mag. was aimed low. I think I'll just use skateboard or tread tape instead.
Lesson learned - seemingly harmless changes can have severe consequences. Fortunately, I tested the pistol before putting it into service.
