install supressor on non threaded barrel

wanting to install a suppressor on my mp15-22 sport that i purchased years ago but the barrel is not threaded. Is there a adapter to slide on the end of the barrel or is it best to remove the barrel and take to a gun smith and have it threaded? Thanks

Threaded would be best. But Tacticoooll 22 has adapters available for Flash hider. Trade it anti get a threaded Barrel

I have 0 experience with suppressors. But I want one as well. Lots of reading over the years. Hard to spend more than the price of the gun to put a muffler on it and he in a federal database

Suppressors in the USA are time consuming and expensive to acquire. My advise is to do everything possible to protect the investment. The only way I would recommend using a suppressor, is to remove the barrel and have it threaded by a reputable and recommended smith. Any other option else is a risk to the suppressor.

The Smiths I use are a small % of those who advertise. I have learned the hard way over the past 20 years.

BTW, most suppressors are not designed for the thread length of the 15-22, I think they are .6" long. The The OEM 15-22 threads need a .2" spacer for most suppressors. Stacking tolerances is not recommended for suppressors.

The advantage of having custom threads for the 15-22 is that you can ask for .4"-.5" long threads. Your suppressor MFG will recommend a thread length for the can.

A 22LR suppressor is the quietest and most fun suppressor there is. The 15-22 is a great host.

Or sell it and buy a 15-22 with a threaded barrel. The cost will probably be close to a wash.

I have been shooting suppressed for many years in different calibers. .22 suppressors are threaded 1/2x28. The length of the threads could require a collar to seat against and the manufacturer can advise if that is necessary on your host. If your host barrel is not threaded, most suppressor manufactures offer that service. The makeshift slip on / clamp on things are never recommended by a suppressor manufacturer. You can get a baffle strike and damage or ruin your suppressor. There are so many internet tails regarding obtaining any NFA item it will make your head hurt… “well I don't want to be in a gov database” - guess what - you already are if you have a job and pay taxes, applied for a job where your prints were taken, got a drivers license, etc. Here’s another one - you give up your fourth amendment rights because the gov can search your house at any time. This is total BS. All you did when you got your approved form 4 was paid a tax to own your NFA item and agreed to advise the authorities if it is stolen, etc. The new e-file forms that ATF started using in December 2021 should make approval times very short and your dealer can walk you through the process. Once you own a suppressor, you will likely be looking for another to suppress a different caliber. YouTube is your friend here.

WRT the speed of the 'electronic' application process, I hope it will speed things up, but I'll believe it when I see it.

But both are only as good as the threading job.

That was just a cheap Aimpoint knockoff I had on my previous 15-22 to mirror my 5.56 AR, which has an Aimpoint Pro. I moved it over to the pistol when I sold the 15-22 rifle. It died recently and I replaced it with a Sig Romeo MSR, as I'm no longer worried about it being a clone of the 5.56 gun. Only have sight-in rounds through the MSR, so I can't really give an informed opinion on that yet.

I recently purchased my first suppressors and used the Silencer Shop Kiosk. I am at the point where I am waiting to certify my documents with the FFL. It has been pretty seamless so far. You buy your silencer and tax stamps then set up an account right there in the shop using the silencer shop Kiosk. You do your fingerprints photo etc. all at once. Once that is complete you then have to create an account with the ATF that uses the same name and email address you set up with Silencer Shop. They create the forms then you certify with the FFL they submit to the ATF and then you wait for approval. Once you have the account with SShop you can use the same one for additional purchases etc.

Right now, the ATF system is unstable and was crashing pretty regularly from what SShop has told me, so we will see what the wait time is. I bought mine on 12/23 and still have to certify the docs as I mentioned earlier.

We will see how long it takes.

I have a co-worker with an FFL that I do most of my NFA stuff with, and we were just talking about it. I have two paper Form 4s a few months into the process, but I also have an SBR that I need to transfer from myself into my Trust, so I may use the eFile for that once the system is stable.

He told me one of the new things on the forms is a box to check if you've done NFA paperwork in the last two years. That is something that should have happened a long time ago. If you already have NFA registered items, there's no reason new paperwork should take any longer than a Brady "instant" background check.

I used Silencer Central. Before the e-filing, they still did all the paperwork on line and sent you a fingerprint card to do yourself and send in. They will also create the trust for you after the sale for free. I also sent the upper of my AR 15-22 to them to have it threaded. They make a kit they send you that has the case to put it in and wrap. Yes, each of these things cost money, but every speck of the process is done from your easy chair. AND, they send the suppressor to your house when you are approved. I have to say that the couple things I needed help with from them, their help over the phone was pleasant and qualified.

I’ve bought several suppressors through Silencer Shop. No issues and they make it as easy as it gets.

A 15-22 suppressed will put a smile on you face. If you use a 16” barrel you’ll need subsonic ammo to avoid the “crack” which comes with supersonic ammo. ~1050fps is the threshold.

Their "turn key" 360 mailing program may cost a little more than actual shipping 2 ways but between the labels, boxes, gun cases etc. I don't see how it could be more simple. Would also seem to do away with some of the shipping vendor issues as it is their pre-paid label you are putting on the package as I have heard of some folks having difficulty getting certain firearm parts shipped by various vendors YMMV.

I was in the same boat as the OP with an unthreaded 15-22 and was very satisfied with their packaged shipping/threading service and turnaround time. I would strongly suggest sending the entire upper if dealing with a 15-22...

A suppressor is not a miracle, alignment is. The barrel must be threaded true and suppressor must also be true. Barrel threads to suppressor threads to muzzle. If it’s off just a tad where bullet tics baffles, it’s useless.
It may make those excited over suppressor happy but won’t shoot for beans. I’ve seen many shade tree thread jobs on barrels using dies. It don’t work unless a jam nut is used and sometimes that isn’t enough.
When I was a kid I wanted a silencer on my 22 rifle for criminal purposes.
I wanted to sneak into prime squirrel woods that were posted.

Just wanna chime in that while you'll definitely need it threaded, either by a smith or by trading it for a threaded model, it's totally worth it.

I never found the juice worth the squeeze with most centerfire cans, but oh man is it fun on a bun in .22lr. I put it off for years till one day I just decided that I'd never stop whining about the wait unless I just did it. Six months later I'd wished I'd started the process years earlier.
